Finally:

Leftfoto Camera Full Cage for Sony Alpha 7C

This is the only one that could work with Techart on A7C.

Thanks for the message! I saw that one, too. Based on a thread on Reddit, it seems to be the only one available that is compatible with the Techart adapter for A7c. It is also available on eBay with a lower price.

Can anyone catch me up on the m-mount AF for e-mount adapter status in 2022?

I used the OG TAP when it first came out on my a7r2. Are there any adapters that offer substantial AF improvement for m-mount lenses at this point wwith new/different adapters or firmware?

I am interested in one that would work on: Sony a7r2, a7r3, a7iii or a7c (Not a7r4, a1 or a9 please).

I have unearthed my old TAP using it on an a7rII NKIR V3+ w/ a Noct 50/1 v2 (WO mostly of course) with great results, even on moving dogs with some anticipation and luck

I used manual focus lenses on Sony A7R series cameras with and without the TAP for about five years. I had consistently good results with the TAP and the A7R2 but neither the A7R3 or A7R4 were at all reliable. I bought a Fotodiox Pronto to see if that was any better but it wasn’t. If you go back to page 50 in this thread (which you may already have done), @rji2goleez reports that he is more than happy with the Pronto v2. It does seem that they have addressed a number of the deficiencies of the original TAP though not, unfortunately, the most severe one—the wobble—which is inherent in the design.

After a couple of years using Leica M cameras I concluded that MF with lenses in the 28mm to 50mm range on mirrorless cameras was inferior to rangefinder focusing so I replaced my Leica R, Contax C/Y, Zeiss Classic ZE, and Voigtlander E lenses with 24mm, 35mm, and 50mm GMs. Sony for AF, Leica M for MF, which is why I decided against trying a Pronto II.

It doesn’t surprise me that you’ve had success with the TAP on your NKIR modded A7R2. What does surprise me is that Leica M to Sony E versions of either the Techart TZM-01 or the Megadap Leica M to Nikon Z adapters have [not] been released, both of which AFAIK have addressed the wobble problem. Given the consistent interest in adapting Leica M lenses to Sony cameras—as also evidenced by the enthusiasm for the recently announced TTA 6-bit code reading M to E adapter—and therefore the bigger potential market, I would have expected either Megadap or Techart (or both) to have designed E-mount versions of their Z-mount adapters.

I've been hopeful that "Megadap" would release a Leica M to Sony E AF adapter like they did for the Nikon Z
https://megadap.net/product/mtz11

Aside from the 'wobble' issue, what bothers me when shooting with TAP or Pronto is the loud buzzing noise. It's a mood killer for me.

First off--thanks for the response. Secondly, I can understand why you prefer MF on an RF for m-mount glass. The focus experience isn't lovely on MILC in some aspects for sure, especially on some cameras like A7r2. I allocate for lenses, not bodies within my budget, so the m bodies are out, though I've went that route in the past--loved using them though.

I like the GM's, but I really like the draw of some of my older glass, especially the 35 Lux pre-asph and 50 Noct, which are very TAP-able. I was just hoping that the AF experience would have improved from years past. But realistically, the Pronto 2 seems better, but hard for me to tell how much. @rji2goleez, did you use the OG TAP? How does the Pronto 2 compare? Do you need an a7r4 to see a real difference?

@fredmiranda I didn't know about the Megadap just looked a bit--looks great. You don't know if that's coming to e-mount? I am surprised it went Z first, knowing the protocols aren't open like Sony. I guess less competition?

Here’s hoping that in addition to eliminating the wobble they’ve also drastically improved the firmware updating and focal length configuration processes.

I looks like they improved the design and eliminate the wobble. It's also much more compact than the predecessor:

Smaller size is always welcome. I wonder if it can a) support more than 600g b) focus lenses longer than 50mm without prefocusing and c) what it sounds like.

Hopefully no battery drain either.

Have my fingers crossed. They worked on it for over 3 years.

I hope it works well with older cameras like the 7ii and 7iii variants.

The buzzing sound + feeling that AF was not to be trusted fully gave me a turn off. Kept it, used it again for some time after many months, but again it didn't stick.

More info from dpreview:

"The biggest change is the new autofocus system, which now relies on four smaller motors instead of a single large motor. This not only allows autofocus to be faster and quieter, but has also afforded Techart the ability to reduce the size of the adapter. Techart has also improved the durability of the mounting plate, which should mean less wear and tear on the mount, even when using larger lenses."

Looks like the aperture must be at F2 like the old one to get proper exposure. I doubt it will be any easier to get proper exif, but time will tell. Wish their customer support weren’t so atrocious. Still if it does not wobble and AF is snappy, might have to risk it. Perhaps they’ll ship a test one to Fred.

i think point b) above may not be possible. The travel distance of the adapter must be less than the thickness of the adapter and thus is limited to the difference in flange distance between LM and E mounts (unless they have engineered a telescoping multipiece ‘barrel’ which it does not look like it has)

The high pitch buzzing sound is what kills it for me as well. Hopefully the new adapter is quieter.

Well, I have the new TAP LM-EA9 adapter in hands and I really like what I see so far. I will start a new thread with more thoughts on it soon.
Most of the issues I had with the previous EA7 seem to be resolved. There will be no more wobble since there are actually 4 motors and the unit goes back and forward with the same amount of support. There is still noise when AF is working but it's way more tolerable now...meaning it's not high pitch. The new adapter is all metal and it feels more sturdy than the previous version since it does not have the plastic bump for the motor at the bottom.

The software didn't get much functionality improvement but AF is more accurate now, especially when using Eye-AF. I've tested it with many lenses so far: Leica 35/1.4, Leica 28/1.4, Voigtlander 28/2 II, Leica 50/1.4 and CV 50/1.5. All did great. Longer lenses need manual focus adjustment just like before.

I have a question for those who still have the EA7 version:
When changing the focal length in camera (by changing the aperture setting). Does that change in focal length only happens in camera to aid IBIS or it's also written to the EXIF when exporting the raw file? In other words, does the focal length change shows up in LR or it always show the default "40mm f/2.8" ??

It change the focal length on focal length tab , 28mm as exm.
But the lens remains still the 40mm 2.8.

This will still remain with the new TAP LM-EA9 version. The focal length can be added to the EXIF but the camera name will always be a constant.
One could add the correct aperture to EXIF as well but the exposure would have to be compensated using exposure compensation in-camera since proper exposure is only achieved selecting f/2 aperture.

This is from this FAQ which still applies:

=============

Is there a way that I can have the actual aperture recorded in the EXIF?
FM member joe256 has reported a method of recording an aperture value (from F2 to F8) in the EXIF, whilst still exposing correctly:
Learned something new (to me at least) about the TAP. You can put the f/stop set on the lens in the EXIF (2.0 - 8.0) in addition to the focal length AND maintain the correct exposure. You do this by using exposure compensation. Set the aperture on the camera the same as on the lens, then compensate accordingly by dial or menu:
f/2.0 = 0, f/2.8 = -1, f/4.0 = -2, f/5.6 = -3, and f/8.0 = - 4 . F/8.0 has to be done in the menu while the first three can be done on the top dial or the menu. You can also interpolate. F/11 @ -5 exposes correctly and puts the aperture in the EXIF but it resets the EXIF focal length to 15mm unless you remap it via the Android app.

If you are new to TAP, note the difference between setting the f/stop set on the lens and setting it on the camera.

ADDED: If you change the exposure compensation by the menu, it resets to 0 when the camera is turned off.
