Thanks nampramos. I appreciate your answer. It's so disappointing though! But yeah, I guess you're right. I'll just have to order the samyang in canon mount. I know it's too heavey (800+grams) but I've seen other people using it on the techart, both in this forum and on youtube, so I'll just try it.
I'm more disappointed, though, that I can't use my Laowa (Venus) 15mm all-manual macro lens as an AF in this way. Darn that lens is great. If it had AF would be perfect

Does anyone know or have tried to adapt the Zeiss 35/2 ZF.2 to TAP with a Nikon F to Leica M adapter? The Zeiss 35/2 Distagon AF.2 is only 560 gms. The Milvus is also an option but 100 gms heavier. Interested in how well such a setup works. I loved my 35/2 more than the f/1.4.

@Apirola, I went through the same drill. Maybe others, more athletically gifted, do use the Nikon or Canon Samyang 135 with the TAP, but I found the experience truly awful. Just too, too heavy. I urge you to try it before committing. Otoh, it's a hell of a mf lens!! Good luck and best wishes!

It works just fine on the TAP.

Thanks, @jacquesvroom ! I'll have to hold off on trying the samyang /techart combo, as I've just burned my budget, getting (ironically given your comment about weight) the sony 24-70 GM and the sony 70-300 G. Both are really heavy, heavier than the samyang from memory. So yeah, I'm definitely getting a work out.
But my TAP just arrived in the post today! So far I've only tried it with my gorgeous looking vintage M42-mount Zeiss Tessar 50mm 2.8 "Eagle Eye". I have the all-chrome version (circa 1950s or 60s I think). Just tested it out. The TAP hunts and doesn't always find focus. Sometimes it locks, but is not in focus and even without moving the camera at all, I re-press the shoot-button half-way and it hunts and this time gets focus correct. But I'm not complaining! It's so fun, and I can't believe the shots I'm getting out of this old beauty of a lens!
My previous experiences with this lens were, I now realize, a little unfairly impacted by my poor eyesight resulting in poor focus. With this TAP I've brought this lens back to a new life!
I can't wait to try my other vintage glass and my one M-mount (the voigtlander skopar 21mm -though with that one everything is almost always in focus anyway, so MF is easy).
Thanks for listening to my excited gibbering hehe.
P.S. The TAP also looks/feels more robust than my techart contax-to-sony adapter which I'd had to return because it stopped working after 1-2 uses. Hopefully this TAP will last better.

Ohhh lawdy... the Laowa lens (15mm macro) I was raving about... turns out they sublicensed it to opteka to make a cheap generic version for canon. Which I just nabbed for $200 in mint condition 2nd hand (ebay). Have just popped it on my TAP. DAMN! It ROOOCKKS! This lens is SHARP, does true 1:1 macro, and is 15mm, so gives really unusual looking views. With the TAP it becomes autofocus! I'm sooo happy right now haha.
Ok, so I don't wanna violate the site/topic guidelines, but if anyone wants me to post a couple of sample shots, let me know whether I should do it here or if there's a separate topic for that.
-Andrew.

Seems like you're on a roll! I suspect more members will see your sample pix if you post them in the FE Images Thread. It would certainly be great to see a camera+TAP+15mm combo shot in this thread, though...

Andrew,

There is a place for TAP photographs already in place.

Thanks, I'm embarrassed to say I was unaware of this thread.

[Edited] I'm even more embarrassed to say I was aware of (but had forgotten about) this thread because I liked an early (Sept 16) post.

Thanks. So I got a test pic ready, but when I go to post it in the forum by clicking on the little picture icon, it wants me to paste a URL; ie, it won't let me select a photo from my hard drive. I tried uploading to my profile on this site, hoping that would then give me a URL to paste in, but it says I don't have the right to upload as I'm not a subscriber. Can someone explain how to upload pics here?
Ta.
Andrew.

Hi and greetings from Finland. Thanks everybody for a great thread, very much useful information!

I have had TAP for a few weeks now, and I must say I'm very happy with it, now that it is working like it should. First copy of TAP I received was namely a brick. It didn't work at all and wasn't even recognized by the camera. People at the Techart were very helpful though and I got a replacement quickly.

I've been using the adapter mainly with Jupiter 3+ and a few other 50mm lenses. Now I would be interested in buying a longer lens, quite possibly a Nikkor 105 mm F/2.5 pre AI/AI. What I would like to know is how much pre-focusing does a 105mm lens need. If I leave the lens at the infinity position how close will TAP be able to focus? Also it would be nice to know, how close will I have to set the lens focusing ring to reach MFD with TAP -and what would be the furthest focusing distance with that setting?

I would be very grateful for any information on the subject.

Best regards, Jyrki

From my personal experience -

I think the TAP moves a maximum of ~5mm.
You generally need to get the lens prefocused to less than 5mm of travel of that focal point, but I find that it can hunt straight past the point of focus, so ideally you want to be prefocused closer to it or nearer the mid-point of that 5mm range for the TAP.

How that works with the 105, depends on the throw of the lens from it's MFD to infinity.

Also, remember that the Sony AF likes vertical lines (hope I didn't get that backward ) as focal points, for the most accurate, fast, and consistent AF experience.

Thanks Bluloo.

It's a pity that TAP won't work equally well with longer focal lengths than it works with <50mm lenses. Maybe there will be a TAP model in the future which is optimized for longer lenses with a longer movement than 5mm.

Well, Nikkor 105 F/2.5 quite inexpensive so I guess it's worth a try anyway.

Such a device would have to be much thicker and probably significantly heavier to get the reach for longer lenses and to accommodate the mass it needs to rapidly move.

Not to mention the added mount stress.

But yes, we can dream.

What's the cheapest option to allow mounting tripod QR plate (Manfrotto if it makes any difference) without going full L plate? (I think it adds too much bulk) I just noticed today that it doesn't have enough clearance to accommodate it...

The amount of prefocusing a lens requires with the TAP depends just as much on its focus throw as its focal length in my experience. For example, my Contax C/Y 85/2.8 has a short focus throw and, when it's set to infinity, the TAP will focus on a subject less than 2 meters away. Whereas my Sonnar 85/4 ZM has quite a long focus throw and, because I mostly photograph subjects closer than 5 meters away, I find myself constantly prefocusing when using it with the TAP.

I have the Nikkor-P.C 105/2.5 in LTM mount, which is the precursor to the Nikkor Auto, Nikkor, Nikkor AI, and Nikkor AI-S versions of the 105/2.5. My LTM lens has a really long focus throw so I suspect you'll have to frequently prefocus with one of the SLR versions.

I'm writing this on my iPad and can't easily add links but if you Google "nikkor one thousand and one nights" you can access a Nikon site of stories about the development of various lenses including both of the 105/2.5 models I've mentioned.

I donīt understand this. Both lenses are 85er, so the TAP handles them the same way, if they are set on infinity.
The TAP uses its extension of 5 mm (?) to change the distance from infinity to 2 meters. The optic law (Huygens) does not change according to the throw of a lens.

Hi,
overcoming my frustration that the app only supports android, I borrowed an android phone to make these changes - didn't work. I just bought an android phone and am frustrated to see, that there are only 4 f-stops in the App that I can customize F11, F13, F14 and F16. This is insufficient for my collection of primes. Any advice on this?
Best regards
Marc

It's not intuitive but what appears to be list of 4 f-stops is actually scrollable, giving you the option of customizing values from F11 to F32.

I'm guessing the issue is that the Tele Tessar 4/85 is a stop slower, so the AF on TAP is less good, with the result that the lens has to be closer to being in focus for the AF to work. Nothing to do with the focus throw.
