Visited Koroneburg Renaissance Festival in Corona, CA yesterday, and took the 105 with us (in addition to the Sigma 35/1.4 art). Will probably create a thread under People forum once I am done with editing. For now, here are just a couple of frames with the 105 which performed beautifully...

I don't know why but this lens is extremely picky with the AF modes. All my other lenses I used AF-C and the only downside really was it ate up the battery power quicker. But I used it because sometimes people moved. It worked great for people standing still and moving. However, with this lens, the AF isn't very accurate if I use AF-C and people are posed and not moving. I have to use AF-S instead, then almost every posed shit is tac sharp. But of people are walking, using AF-C is a must for me with this lens. I don't mind it, but man is it picky.

Wow.

It's crazy you mentioned this... I shot a wedding yesterday. Was shooting processional and most of the shots that fired set to AF-C were slightly out of focus. With the frustration thinking it was a problem with the body, I swapped the lenses and mounted the 105 on a different D750. But then I didn't have much movement so I couldn't tell whether it was the body or the lens.

I was pretty frustrated so I'll have to do some extensive testing in the coming days...

it's a lot of glass to move. but that is no excuse.

I treat AF-C like VR (VR - if you're on a tripod, turn it off).
Posed and not moving? I do not use AF-C.

I always use AF-C but I usually shoot in Manual mode and most of the time in spot metering and focusing.

Here is Kate a rather continuously moving ballerina with her pirouettes......

I've been practicing my portraits with the 105mm wide open. I try to focus on the eye, but this can be tough handheld with a small subject.

It was driving me crazy. Posed shots were just slightly off and I tried AF fine tune, nothing fixed it. I also tried another camera body, same problem. Sometimes I couldn't noticed until I zoomed in at 100%. But it was so annoying. Then I thought for the heck of it to try some different settings. Changed to AF-S, all the posed shots were spot on tac sharp. But then moving shots were slightly off. So I changed to AF-C for the moving shots. Now it's perfect, I just have to remember to switch back and fourth.

I rented the 105 for an event and noticed the same thing re shooting at 1.4. Most of my shots with shutter speed of 1/1000 or higher were tack sharp using AF-C 9 point dynamic with my D800E; anything with slower shutter speed was a mixed bag with several missed focus shots.

I have had success with my D810 and 105E with AF-C on AUTO with face/eye recognition at f/1.4. Crazy as it sounds this seems to work better trying to pick a single point with focus and recompose. Just to clarify this not LV just through the OVF. The D750 seems to work very similar.

Nikon service!

Well Nikon received my 105mm this past Thursday and they scanned it in their system Monday.... today I get an email stating that the lens is ready to be shipped. WOW, fast service. I gues the took the from element off to clean it. A friend mentioned that they may have swapped it out due to the quick service. But I doubt they did that. I'm just ready to have it back.... still shocked about the fast service on a cleaning of a complex lens.

Turns out Nikon replaced the front element, too much dust I suppose. Took the lens apart and cleaned, ran firmware update check, tested focus, sharpness, and general shooting of the lens. Plus a complete check and clean. Not sure why the front lens element had to be replaced, I guess it was worse than I thought.

Shot late this evening with D810 and off camera SB 910. What I love about the D810 is the 64 ISO DR in low light using low fill in flash. Having used other flash systems on different cameras makes you realize just how well thought out the Nikon lighting system is :

From a shoot last night with great light.
One mistake; the 3rd one is F2.5, but the background was far enough away for a nice bokeh
Last one is processed with Silver Efex Pro

Chris nice framing.

She is coming off a little overexposed on my screen.
Obviously, you were in harsh sunlight and that can't be avoided.
I don't even take my camera out in that sort of light, for the most part.

You can try to turn the highlights down a little, on your subject.

Cheers

I turned down the exposure just a tad.
It was after 20:30 in the evening.
