The $400 85mm f/1.8G can do 95% of what this lens can do
don't disrespect the 105E or the 85 1.4G like that again :P
you could buy a pair of used primes, 35 1.4G and 85 1.4G, for the price of a new 105E though, that's worth noting.
and the pair of them, are just slightly heavier than the 105.
but I'll say this.... the 105E is the best modern day prime lens Nikon has made.
gotta pay to play!!!

Some times you just need a 85mm FL. I have both the 85/1.4 and 1.8 G. Personally I love the 85/1.4 G as it is about the half the size and weight of the Sony GM 85.
One of our favorite destinations for a family bike ride is a secluded lake about 8 miles from our cabin. We always stop there to take in the peaceful scenery.

I get it. I have the 1.4g myself. It's my favorite lens. And my favorite FL for portraits outdoors. I prefer being a little closer (85 vs.105). And obviously the weight loss is an advantage.
Cheers
I get mine back today from Nikon service, can't wait! Instead of having UPS deliver it, I've scheduled a pick up so I can go grab it from the facility instead of having them leave it on my porch.
Elijah, nikon service center wasn't real busy, so they had a fairly quickly turn around time. However this was the California location since I'm west of the Mississippi. I'm not sure how the service center in New York looks as for their turnaround time. But it may be a decent time for you to send your lens in for cleaning.

Good to hear.
I'm actually sending out mine in the beginning of august since I don't have a single wedding booked in august of this year (surprisingly)
I had an AF motor issue with my 200mm f/2.0 VR so I actually DROVE to New York to drop it off for repair.
It ended up being a 3 week repair. However, I was not an NPS member at that time. Since I am now, I'm sure it'll take much much faster but still, I don't want to risk it!
