Hi Phillipe,

I think the sensor is quite capable of depth, but I agree that these shots by Ming don't particularly show it. Perhaps Gordon is right that this is the processing, but I think it might be the composition and choice of aperture as well.

Here are some shots from the 5D-50c, which has the same sensor, from the Hasselblad site. They are from an an Italian photographer named Daniele Barraco. I rather like the work, and I think both the portraits and the distant shots both show nice depth:

http://www.hasselblad.com/our-world/feature/creators-choice-daniele-barraco

The X1D in the right hands ought to be able to as well.

I share your view as to the pictures you show, Steve. And about Ming's, as well. I have, however, another parameter in mind that could be to blame for less-than-optimal depth: the lenses. I hope I am wrong, mind, but, until proven wrong...

Hi Phillipe,

The good news is that the HC lenses that were used in the link I provided (likely the 100 f/2.2 and/or the 150 f/3.2 for the portraits) are quite useable on the X1D, and aren't even that big. The 100 f/2.2 will be about the size or perhaps a little smaller than the GM 85 f/1.4. The 150 is a bit bigger, but about the size of a 135 f/2 lens. So, although not ideally sized for portraits these two lenses should be excellent, and I plan to get them both.

That said, you are absolutely right about the new XD lenses made for the X1D. The jury is still out. They will be sharp and with few aberrations, but will they have the depth both you and I would like? I think it is way too early to tell.

I don't think the subject matter he picked (PJ) was the best way to showcase the merits of the system.

What is depth? Is that high resolution over distances? Color depth? Contrast? All of these things?

Cool. Looks like this is the deprecator to the Leica SL.

I don't see anything convincing Leica to set reasonable prices. I don't think they see themselves as competing with the market in the least, and there are enough people who will buy literally anything with a red dot that I'm inclined to agree.

FF lenses?!
It is possible to use FF lenses on a APS-C camera via a lens booster, thankfully gaining an fstop.
But would it be possible to develop a lens extender adapter from say Leica to the X1D format?
Ok, no boosting but expanding, so loosing an f/stop instead of gaining one.

I am aware of the failing focal plane shutter in the X1D.
Jan

"Lens booster" is a nice term. For this adapter "lens looser". No good marketing!

A specially made teleconverter could do this, at the expense of image quality. Without a focal plane shutter, it wouldnt be very useful. Not sure if it could be done for M mount lenses, but maybe SLR lenses.

I wouldn't hold my breath, but someone could develop a FF to mini-MF teleconverter/format adapter that has a leaf shutter built in to the adapter. It'd probably cost as much as an A7, and provide lower IQ.

Did you guys see the new Hassy X1D in black? I personally prefer this version.

Yeah, I seen this during the photokina coverage!
IF I bought the Hassy, it would have to be this black one. To bad it's a limited edition and is a few thousand more then the regular one.

It is pretty, but I think the silver with black trim is pretty, too. I don't think I'd want to pay the premium if I were interested in that camera.

The x1d with the new 30mm lens will be 13mm longer than shown. That will as close to a modern SWC as we'll get. It would be all I need after hitting the lotto.

The black one looks great. I see it listed in Germany as a Kit with the 45mm, price is 1.200 € above the cost of the silver + lens.

Makes no sense to me, looks great. For the standard price they should just offer the frame in Silver, Black, (Zeiss) Blue and (Leica) Red At least put another differentiator to Leica, not that they need it apparently ... silly prices for nothing ... still, really interesting to have an alternative to Leica at that price point.

God these people are asshats. I thought we were past the Lunar / Stellar debacle. At least they haven't released a "pre-distressed" American Apparel Lenny Kravitz Edition yet. But this still literally reduces my interest in even the silver version.

What would you call the photogs that buy these limited editions?

I'd call them, "spendy".

Photographers should buy whatever they want but personally charging a premium for the 'black' version is a big let down and says a lot. I will probably look at their closest competitor.
