i feel like cameras focus slightly differently each time you focus them, even the same camera, same position, the focus varies between attempts. In fact, that's what we should call focus... Attempts. It's never right on. So, if one attempt just happened to be better than another. Well, the thread was about noise I know. Thanks for putting these up!!

Given that D7200 is about the best APS-C sensor currently available, being quite close in most of the ISO range and slightly better at high ISO would be very nice.

Problem is that consumers buy cameras according to specs, so manufacturers are tempted to exaggerate and Nikon now needs to beat Sony, not just Canon.
Nikon accuracy has been better than the others so they have built my trust and sold me many cameras.
However, "Up to" does not mean much and if they can not deliver, they will get a lot of cameras back and sell less in the future.
I hate the A series so much that I have taken the gamble on ordering the D500 which is more affordable and probably better for Video than the D5 or any other Nikon.

Thanks, that's very cool, Steve. I know that you're busy, so just thought I'd ask. But, driving to FL in the morn, well that is a tough deal. Hope you have no issues along the way and, of course, you know you have to be very careful where the Ohio Highway Patrol is active. Looking forward to seeing some great pics from the trip!
If I have the time this weekend, I'll download them and give them a play in Nikon NX-D. I don't have the latest installed yet. I'll also shoot some test shots to compare with yours and then post my results next week.

Totally agree with Steve here, some have just unrealistic high expectations of DX sensors.

How much actual difference do you think there is between the 810 and 500 sensors beyond size? When nikon pushes 60mp on their FFs it will just be an oversized DX sensor.
Thanks for posting the comparison images. Image processing gives the D500 the appearance of better noise performance than the D7200. They do it a couple of ways - as pointed out in various posts and consolidated here:
1 - The lower resolution - improves quality and type of noise
2 - Desaturated color profile - to reduce color bleed at higher ISO (@ higher ISOs the D7200 had a little bleeding of the orange box into the shadows but not so much on the D500)
3 - Micro-contrast modifications - I believe sharpness and contrast might have been pushed just a little - just enough to give us pixel peepers something to ooo and aaahhhh at.
When these 3 are combined it seems as though the D500 has better IQ. SEEMS being the operative word. :-)
Previously I thought the D7200 had some of the best crop sensor IQ ever. That's tough to beat and until new sensor tech, like organic sensors and such, hits the market current sensor tech can't go much further.
The reason to buy the D500 is the AF system, 4K or the body. IQ-wise everything else appears fairly equal. The astounding new AF system alone is enough for many of us to get one.
RRRoger - I just saw a Nikon D500 selling for $500 over list price on Amazon. The earthquake at the sony sensor plant plus the high demand and the super positive reviews - I bet you might be able to get $2700 for selling a new and unopened D500. :-)

After watching Fro and looking around, it seems to me that there is a lot of rationalization going on. There's not really much in the way of controlled comparisons happening, aside from the images I posted. Just a lot of guys saying how great it is and how it's the "best ever" with no real proof to back it up. (Again, at least as far as I've seen)
I understand, because I wanted to believe it was going be WAY better, but the truth is, it's really close to the D7200. It's interesting how the fan boy YT people aren't doing controlled comparisons. I think DPreview will probably get their D500 ISO tests up in the next few days and DXO in the near future. I think we're going to see the D500 is roughly the same performance as the D7200 when compared at the same size - cuz that's what I'm seeing in my tests. Even when compared at their native sizes, it's pretty darn close.
Which is fine by me, I like the D7200 and I appreciate the improvements the D500 brings to the table
