Does anyone know if a poor copy of this lens is detectable using only an APS-C sensor--i.e., does the smaller image circle of an APS-C camera allow one to check for smeared corners?
I ask because I would like to get this lens for an upcoming trip, but I will only have access to an a6500 for at least a few more months. So I only want to buy the lens now if I would be able to accurately assess it for smeared corners. Otherwise, I will wait.

Thanks very much. I appreciate the help. I work at a university, so I am going to see if the art or communications departments have a FF Sony they can let me use for ten minutes.

More likely ten times ten minutes, because you have to test ten samples to find a good one (I gave up after testing five).

Ha! yes, but only one at a time. There is another thread on the CV 15 that asks where things are now with defective copies, and a number of people are reporting good copies the first time. So maybe CV got tired of dealer returns that they had to re-manufacture. There must have been a flood.

I just got a pretty sharp Voigt 15mm and tested it with the Bombo filter attachment and holder.
Shot with it a 4.5, 8 and 11 and no vignetting with a 2 stop grad. The filter holder is pretty slick, but if you are using ND filters and they have the neoprene gasket around the edges, they may not go in the first filter slot unless you put the neoprene side facing out (2 total filter slots).
Filter attachment and holder with expedited shipping from Vietnam was $219 and was delivered 4 days after I ordered it.
Here are pic of it and with the GND (straight from camera-- converted to jpeg and resized to 8x12-- no sharpening or any other corrections)
Thanks for the post. I had looked at this holder but decided against a purchase for a number of reasons including the limitations with filters using gaskets that you mention. I must admit it still tempts me though. Do you feel there is any risk of the holder scratching filters if there is insufficient clearance? (I assume this is why gasket filters won't fit in normally.)

I did not see any scratching, but my filters were glass, and i did not want to try and force them into the first slot with the gasket toward the lens. On the other hand, that means that the first slot is quite close to the holder, so less chance of a light leak.

Scrolling through the later pages of this thread, it doesn't seem like there is any consensus about whether the QC issues were ever resolved with this lens. I've been looking for a replacement for my Rokinon 14mm f2.8 with better sunstars and this seems like the best choice. How many have purchased the lens within the last couple months and gotten good copies? Does B&H and/or other retailers rebox returns (poor copies) and resell them as new?

I got a really good copy of the Choppy from a fellow FMer. Took it to downtown San Francisco today where people are having a protest against AT&T. Probably one of the happiest protests I have seen. Shooting with an UWA is quite challenging. Does produce some interesting perspectives for street photography.

Received my second copy today - and surprisingly, the serial number is just next to my older one. The second copy is significantly worse in the corners than the first one. Second one also going back, while a third has been ordered. Keeping the first one still - I have another two weeks before I have to return it.
