I shot with one on a 7r2 before the lens hit the u.s. at a special Sony demo location. I think I shot the unicorn because it was reasonably fast and it was quiet (on a busy street). Demand the unicorn.

@ecarlino@, looks great, thanks, why no 1.4 with the GM?
i'm trying to compare with the Batis as close as possible.
yesterday i shot both at f/2.
today i'm trying f/1.8 vs f/1.7 (or f/1.6).
frankly, i'd never shoot the lens at f/1.4 because i think by stopping down 1/3 or 2/3 of a stop you have a massive pick up in quality from various aberrations being cleaned up (at least that is the way it is with most lenses). i'm also not into razor thin DoF.
Frankly I've never been a fan of the background out-of-focus transition rendition from the Batis. Too much contrast making colors appear too vivid. Add a little distance from your subject and it gets too harsh depending on the background elements.
On this comparison you can really see when the Batis background starts to swirl. For me, the GM rendering is much more pleasant. On the other hand, for landscapes, the Batis will have the micro-contrast and color edge in a lighter package. Different tools for different applications.
@ecarlino, appreciate you take time to do the sample but would you mind to resize your picture to smaller size ? and post like 4 or 5 at a time? couple image at certain f stop would do the job. i'm viewing on my 34" monitor and it is all over the place and quite frankly, i just scow it all down...too much images to check out.

ask Fred how i reacted yesterday when someone (Schlotkins) requested something similar.
let's just say i may have had a GuyMancuso moment :-)
but now that i'm in a better mood, it's easy enough for you to ignore my posts as i will 'hide' yours (and save Fred the trouble of re-jiggering several posts and threads).
i realize all these photos are getting in the way of the conversation about lens motor noise.....
ecarlino, i can spend hours go scroll back to your thread with hundreds of same image all over the place to find your respond but i'll not going do that. It is just a common respect for other member here. We appreciate your time to do the test but at the same time, please respect us as a viewer too. Better yet, if you have a blog of your own, "dump' all of your pictures in there and let us choose to what to view. btw, i say this with the most respect to you. it is just ridiculous that i have to scroll all the way down just to read other member posted.

look j@ck@ss, you've posted 10 times on this thread, 3 about noise, 3 about af speed, 2 about weight and 2 complaining about me posting too many big photos.
what value are you adding?
it's pretty freaking easy to scroll past some photos - i do it all the time with your dumb@ss posts.
i'd suggest you 'hide' me already because on this thread, i'm probably going to "dump" some more photos this week if i have a chance to shoot some more.
btw - the title of this thread is 'testing' (as in shooting photos) not 'talk about noise problems'
If Sony went to the trouble of adding a declickable aperture, then I can't believe that focus noise is normal.
How is the Zony 35 f/1.4 in comparison when focusing, it also has a declickable aperture, is it quieter?.
Seriously people, all the Sony "artisans" never flagged autofocus noise as an issue(not that I read) and people are raising it now with production lenses and showing scratching within the lens housing of a precision instrument .... something seriously went wrong during production in Thailand. Your coin, your decision what you consider acceptable. If my lens arrives exhibiting any of these "traits" it's going back for a full refund.
Does the 24-70 GM make this noise or feel this way during focus?. Me thinks therein lies your answer.

ecarlino, thanks for these shots with lots of different focus and background distances, and in general challenging backgrounds. Putting these shot together with yours from yesterday here is my take. The GM has terrific bokeh. Strengths, IMO, include nice lower contrast bokeh, good transition from in focus to out of focus that is smooth and relatively quick, general soft rendering to the bokeh without just enough character to make it interesting. Bokeh balls are excellent until the edge of the frame and into the corners when they start to squish into ovals. Almost no onion rings in the bokeh circles. Weakness: pretty minor; the squished bokeh balls in the corners and right at the edges; reduced micro contrast weakness 3-D effect (I think). Bokeh is typical of the better Minolta lenses.
The Batis has fairly good bokeh but it has a lot of character that you may or may not like. Strengths: Very good 3-D effect or at least I think I see that. Generally low double outlining. I see very little of that at almost any distance. Weaknesses: High contrast (some may see this as a strength); somewhat swirly at times--we can see that in the last shots; Bokeh balls that are squished with strong onion rings. Bokeh similar to some other Zeiss lenses.

Steve,
I'm starting to develop the same impression in terms of different styles. Frankly, I'm relieved that the Batis has as good of Bokeh in pretty difficult situations as it does, because i considered that its only possible weakness. Some lenses are an "all the time bad bokeh" or "wow, that is really distracting" - for me, the Batis is neither, but there are certain situations where you'll notice it. The GM has a consistently pleasing, if not perfect, bokeh/rendition (but there's that minor detail of the 'costs' in dollars and pounds).
It is supposed to finally be sunny in Chicago this week and I'm hoping to get downtown to do some city/architecture comparisons. Then, I'm going to have to weigh the pros/cons of each and to the extent that the GM comes out ahead in a direct comparison, then it gets really difficult for me because then i have to apply additional factors (price, mass, AF speed/noise) and evaluate whether any advantages in IQ/rendering style outweigh those significant costs. I'm trying to keep an open mind during the process.....
I think both lenses will be in high demand as they both have plenty of strengths that will fit certain users perfectly.

The Unicorn version was only awarded to that guy on dpreview. Sorry, Sony only made one.
Must have been made by the same crew that produced the a6300's that never overheat. The days of preordering anything based on Sony junket reports are over for me, too many letdowns. I can wait a couple weeks for first run problems to be fleshed out.
Seventh from the bottom, the OOF tree with blue flowers, love that Petzval looking swirl, I could use that effect (I know Fred doesn't care for it though). Thanks for posting these! ~Chris
