damn, literally just got the email from formatt that they just shipped via "royal post" the filters i ordered a few wks back - would have seriously considered the app instead.
Guy - I wonder why those filters you like don't come in 100x100? they use the same schlott glass as the formatt, but have some other magical material (nano! gotta love the nano marketing!) their test shots are definitely neutral.

I don't even think Sony realized what they have with the Smooth Reflections app...starting by how they named it!
It really replaces ND filters and that is a BIG deal.
Fred
It's a great app although I haven't used it much yet. I keep hoping Sony will come out with a focus stacking app one of these days.
Anything they have yet for natural looking HDR-type of city lights against sunset, or interiors against bright outside light? Those two things would make me an almost complete convert!
This app only increases exposure time. It's not HDR at all. I usually overexpose my images to better shadows and that gives that look.
The app does gives better colors and clarity than a 10- stop ND though.

I got mine last night and just took a few test shots. Very impressive. Does not feel as heavy as I expected.. perhaps because well balanced. Of course if i carry it around all day to do some street shooting might feel differently.
Beautiful Mono shots, Fred. Your comment that Mono Lake was completely empty threw me at first. I was there in October and it was very low. But you meant people and I felt immediate relief. However, I must stop looking at this topic. The lens results appear to be addictive.

Used the 24-70 F2.8 on a job today. Happy with the focus performance. Happy with the images edge to edge even at high ISO. It performs where it has to for me.

Some more shots with the zoom.
Has that "focus magnify [potential] bug" reared its head again? I encountered something similar on my testing, but I'm not sure it wasn't my over-excitement for the zoom making my trigger-finger twitch over the shutter release.

Chris I switched it to something else Eye AF but decided after a few days to switch it back to magnify and it went away . Kind of strange but yesterday not once did it do it. Ghost. Lol

Have to say I really wonder about that because in our testing Fred's and mine the zoom at 24mm is outstanding. I loved the Batis 25 but I can't find my darn wall test on it to compare.

Maybe considering a Batis 25/2 (a lot sharper) and FE 55/1.8 (already have this one) and Batis 85/ FE90 Macro
MTF of Batis is still much better than 24-70@24
Reviews are in Dutch but the graphs speaks for itself...

I can see the weight (more the handling) being an issue, plus its certainly not a 'fly-on-the-wall-shooters' lens. But I've absolutely no reservations on the rendering and sharpness of the 24-70GM wide-open @ 24mm, it's superb, and my basis for comparison is the FE 1.8/55.
Some of the images I saw out the zoom shocked me, they were so beyond my expectations for a 24-70.
EDIT: I've not seen one yet, but I suppose a good acid test/comparison between the 24-70GM & Batis 25 would be how they perform shooting against the light. Regarding sharpness & MTF tests, at this level, meh, meaningless to me when the ink hits the paper!

Well Congratulations to me!!
We are over page 30 into the rolling review, and I believe I am the first one to receive a badly decentered copy of the GM 24-70. At f2.8 and 50 -70mm it would be unusable in my mind. Still looks great at f8 and at reasonable sizes, the clarity and contrast make it look way better the 24-70mm f4 and very slightly better than Contax 35-70mm.
My Batis 25 is significantly better than this copy of GM at 25mm and f5.6 or f8 on landscapes.
UGH. I had planned on taking it on an upcoming landscape trip, but now I have the dilemma of taking a obviously defective lens, and hoping I don't bump it during trip and therefore stuck with it, or return it now and know there is no chance I will get a replacement in time. First world problem I know (wah!), but this is getting expensive and frustrating. Cost me $30 to return defective Loxia 21 to get a good one and now will be in for a fortune of added shipping costs to get a good GM 24-70.
Maybe I will wait for Best Buy to get in a copy. At least then I can return in person with no shipping charges,

OK, someone post a Sony 24-70 comparison against the 55mm, 35mm 2.8, or Batis 25mm. I've yet to see someone post a comparison against any of these lens.

My buddy and I tested the 24-70mm 2.8 and 85mm 1.4. I will only speak of the 24-70mm on this thread. We tested it against following lenses... 21mm Loxia, 25mm Batis, 50mm Loxia, 90mm Sony Maco, 85mm Otus... We tested it in a lot of cityscape. I did get a chance to shoot about 8 portraits with it from a random lovely model that was working with another photographer, insane sharpness wide open! I tested the autofocus shooting some pigeons, wow! Autofocus is great! At 24mm it was better than my Batis so the Batis will be sold! the loxia 50mm and 21mm beat the 24-70mm. 90mm it was very close! ...Show more →
You find that GM 24-70 to be sharper than the Batis 25mm? Did I read that right? I'd be rather surprised if that's the case, however I open to the possibility.
Although it's the same reviewer, I'm not sure those graphs are comparable. It looks as though the Batis has been put though MTF with an out of camera JPEG (which will be sharpened) and the GM has an unsharpened RAW conversion.
