Yes the end is near , sorry I know looking at walls is boring as watching paint dry but we need to see what is going on before dropping 2200 on a lens. This is not exactly budget minded.
And I am a lens whore as we all know that.

Lets look at the center. I used the wall again but than I did use a side wall i like doing as well. Im going to post side by side and I only did 2.8 and F4 and my feeling is if it takes it to 5.6 on center i really don't want that lens. Always wide or one stop down on center for me.

Test wall for reference

Again I ran into focus issues at 70mm as i have this quirk in my camera that i am going to figure out today but Im clearly out on the red wall. I know this lens does better and I will show a sample of 70mm wide open that is extremely sharp. I feel bad I missed this but hope everyone understands

Here is a wide open handheld 70mm 2.8 shot so I know its not the lens

One word IMPRESSIVE

Thanks for all your hard work Fred.

I read all 14 pages so far. I was wondering how much focus breathing affects this lens, I know its more important on telephoto zooms than midrange zooms.

The 24-70mm GM proves that you shouldn't sell your primes if you're looking for maximum quality, but its a very well rounded package that does exceptional in all areas. : )

I am wondering south breathing as well. Has anybody tested for breathing during focus? Also, is it par focal?

Thanks

Andrew

Not well to be honest I was up st 3:30 working on this. I'm glad this helps which is totally my intention . Between Freds infinity and my mid zone tests . I think it is very helpful

I focused every image in the wall test at 2.8 than shot each series. So given the results it seems it does not

The 55 is a special lens and at 1.8 its hard to beat. I would not sell the 55 1.8 to buy the zoom simple because its nice to have 1 or 2 very fast lenses in the kit when you really need it. 2.8 is nice but to be honest this is not the easiest to shoot in low light handheld. I did it last night and you need to be a rock. Now we always have higher ISO to turn too and the A7rII can do ISO 6400 really nice IMHO. But to me its nice to have

Love the little FE 1.8/55 too, but its look is completely different to these new GM's, this zoom is in a different league from an aesthetic perspective, gone is that edgy/nervous Zeiss vibe I see with the 55. Bring on the GM 1.4/55!

Now, just waiting for B&H to get stock of the zoom within the next 3 weeks as my zoom is off on the right 10% of the frame. Other than that issue, the image quality is sublime.

Thanks for all the tests BTW, appreciated!

I'm done testing this lens per say as the GM 85 comes on Friday but it leaves me with some questions for myself given I have this gap between 21 and 85. I have 3 options A) two lenses I would go 28,50 B) if went one lens a 35mm C) this one hurts my wallet big time the RXrII or whatever it's called and now having the zoom this would be really be neat to have. More bloody money

No hurry on anything . I'm set for awhile. Looking toward to the 85 now

Chris sending it back and getting a good one is a good idea. Peter is doing the the same. Mine looks to be good but hate seeing this as a issue out of the gate.

Chris I would call B&H as I think they do keep stock on hand for returns and not list them for sale. Worth a try

Sending it back doesn't really worry me, stuff happens, its the law of averages & all that. At least I can use it until I get an idea from B&H on the new batch arrival.

I'm with you on the lens line-up, its a little disjointed from an aesthetics perspective too. That RX1Rll is lovely as a 35/2 shooter, but is it going to look 'different aesthetically' from the GM line now? Depends on what you're shooting I suppose. These GM's to my eye are pretty unique in their rendering. I'm thinking the two GM's 85 & 24-70 would cover 90% of what I do.

I hate complication, I'm a minimalist where kit is concerned, the RX1Rll's different battery is almost enough to put me off. I couldn't get to grips with the cropper A6300 with my current lens kit because of the wide issues. But, looking at that little Loxia 21, that'd make a nice (very nice) 30ish on the crop cam, then ad a 35 or 50 Loxia to it for a good backup/second shooter/rangefinder camera for what I do.

Just taking out loud.....please feel free to disregard.

My initial indoor test showed the GM to be a fantastic performer, even wide open.

Here's the overall scene, plus 100% crops from upper-right and center.

It may have been stated and I missed it, but where are these new g master lenses manufactured? Just curious.

Thanks

The arrival of the Sony 24-70 F2.8 GM and all the testing that people have been doing brought to mind the importance sharpening plays in creating a "sharp looking" image.

HERE is a page I added to my website to illustrate how clarity and sharpening impact acutance.

In my view, even with as good a lens as the new 24-70 GM at F8, paying attention to clarity and sharpening with processing images is important.

If these are made in Thailand, I wonder what is being made in Japan (former Minolta glass factory); it was always used for the high end lenses.

Mike, the center performance goes to the G Master lens but the Batis performs better in the corners/edges.

Thanks Guy. I was looking to see if the lens "zoomed in/out sligthly " when focussing from near focus to infinity at its primary focus lengths. Its a video thing... Also does it hold focus when zooming from 24-70mm?

Cheers.

Andrew
