Yea agree that's the thing that has its little hook on me is how this lens is rendering. It's very good and that alone puts thoughts in your head about this mix of lenses you may want to support it and also thinking well I don't want to take it everywhere you go so where is the balance in your kit with regards to many factors like size and weight in that bag. I'm thinking if any prime it maybe should be the fastest lens one can get like a 1.4. Right now I have a L21 and GM 85 so what the heck do I put in the middle of that. Is it one prime or two primes. I want my Loxia 50 back or do I, would the 55 be better. Not fond of the 28 but it gaps well. First world problems I know. ...Show more →
Guy, I think you know what would fill the gap perfectly--a 35 f/1.4. You just need to rent it first so that you know that you get a good one.
I know Steve and that certainly would be my course of action this time. Rent from Roger test it and buy it. I was looking back at files from maybe my first one and I really should have kept it, it was pretty good for sure.

The L35 is just outstanding - but only in the center and out to just short of the wide edge. Even in the small 100% crops above you can see it visibly deteriorate as it heads into the very corner, as the tan lines plunge off a cliff, and take 50% of the performance with them.
The f2.8 crop is about the best for the L35 in the bottom right cnr of the crop, due to less astigmatism even at a low level of contrast, with well drawn tiled roofs and window frames. Zeiss are marketing this pure ZM design legacy lens as a video friendly street/walk around character lens.
Zeiss really need to remedy the situation for this key but troublesome focal length with a Batis 35/2, along the lines of the near impeccable B25, which would be good to see against the zoom's performance, as its 'telephoto corners' are better than the L21, plus a great f2 IQ. How good was the RX1/2 Sonnar's center, even f2.8! The zoom appears highly viable. cheers. ...Show more →
Would it be possible please to hazard a guess at how much of the fov of the Loxia 35mm is lost to the mush at the edges? Would it be as bad as, say, an equivalent 40mm focal length if the bad edges were cropped? I presume its at all distances not just infinity or thereabouts.

I think perhaps we need some F2 G primes with great rendering, across the frame resolution and moderate weight. 28 and/ or 35, 50, 85-100 would do it for me.
From my wall test it is good at F8 in the corners, just to get there though it's soft up to that point. It's a good lens but you need to stop it down for landscape work. Not to confuse I was talking about the L35

I would agree to that. The Batis line would seem the most obvious as the 25 and 85 are very good. But we do need 35,50 and longer. But love to see Sony G take the reins and run a line like it too. I think there end goal should a GM line like this zoom. Cost and weight are secondary to quality than run a F2 line with a good balance between quality and weight. There should be enough in the market to support both lines.
As nice as this lens is, certainly not for everyone for sure . It's big, heavy and expensive but it maybe the best they make. People will support that but you need to feed the size matters , don't need the speed but want great quality lenses on a budget. Big market for that as well

My initial take, its *potentially* bitingly sharp across the frame at maximum aperture wide end. It's too large & too obvious for the kind of shooting I do. It's slightly soft on the far right of the frame at maximum aperture and wide end, but sharper than any other 24 @ f/2.8 I've had (is this acceptable, without seeing other GM's). But at f/8 its pretty much laser sharp across the frame wide end. Bokeh is stunning, I shoot most everything wide open and close (see website).
I don't really know what to think yet, would like to see another copy for that right side frame @ f/2.8. Now I'd like to see how the Batis 25 looks @ f/2, that's got me intrigued, especially because they're far more discrete! Like you say, first world issues.
Anyone have any idea how the Batis 25 looks alongside that Loxia 21 wide-open I kind of have an idea on the Loxia, but all the batis samples I've run across are f/8 and over-sharpened.

Since the conversation has moved to replacing prime lenses, I'll suggest that I would have already purchased this lens if I still shot events. I recently purchased the C/Y Zeiss 35-70mm f/3.4. Now, I'll be sending my Loxia 35mm back for repair. The 35-70mm made me realize that my L35 suffered decentration. This Zeiss can replace primes at both ends and it is compact, but you lose the wide end, 1/2 stop and autofocus, but this lens pairs well in terms of sharpness, color and micro-contrast with the Loxia 21mm, which may be the best wide angle lens that I have ever used. That is why I haven't gone with the GM, but this thread has me taking another look.

I think at least what i was trying to say normally we don't think much of zooms per say they have there place mostly for the PR world and such as they always failed to deliver what a prime lens could do. Heck Im not a zoom fan at all but this lens rendering , look and quality put some thoughts in your head which translate into heck at 35mm focal length thats better than my prime 35mm F2 for example. So questions come to mind well if I used this would I need certain primes in my bag because this zoom is far better than maybe we seen in the past. Thats kind of my thinking here. A lot of what if's thoughts. Typically I buy a mid zone zoom and really don't care that much about the quality because it is a PR lens and concentrate more on great primes. This has me thinking in reverse as i never thought a zoom would be worth its salt. Admittedly I never shot the newer Nikons and Canons since the new releases have come out, so i am behind on that. More random thoughts but it does have me thinking at least. i actually like this bad boy so far. And believe me I am not trying to get anyone to buy one either. Your money do what you will and I make ZERO anything talking about this stuff. This is just my time and my way of helping others. Now you can all donate a dollar to my next lens purchase. ROTFLMAO Im kidding of course.

Guy:
With the exception of 70-200mm, I haven't really used a zoom for years. My old Canon 28-70mm never came out when I wasn't on the clock, so I understand your perspective. This is why I mention the 35-70mm should someone need a smaller limited zoom vs a prime. For example, someone needing a travel lens to pair with the L21.

It's a shame the 24-70 f4 just really never made the grade. I have been through several of them and rentals as well. Never got a killer copy of one but great travel size zoom
