Thanks I got some more general shots to show than I'll get to my real test this week and post. It's maybe the best mid zoom I ever shot. Even my 6 k Leica R 35-70 back in the day was maybe not even this good . That's a very rare lens

Anyway hope this helps i have a lot more to shoot and still need to run the wall test. I do look like I have a very good copy though. Hopefully end of week I will have the 85 1.4
My gut tells me this if you absolutely need a 1.4,1.8 lens for speed than get the focal length you need most in a prime but if 2.8 and f4 you can deal with than i would not be buying a prime. This is a great lens and the bokeh puts a lot of primes to shame even some wide open. This lens makes some interesting decisions IMHO

No joke. A prime-set (L21, L35, L50/FE55) is smaller on a per-lens basis but at the cost of more total cash, more fiddle-factor and when you sum up all of the lenses, more weight.
Surprisingly the question seems to have inverted: it's no longer "can the zoom adequately replace the primes" but "is the greater total cost/complexity/weight/fun/smaller-single-lens-size of the primes worth the minimal IQ gain over the zoom."

Thanks for the test images Guy. Definitely a torture test for bokeh and the zoom performed well.
I'm having a good time here in Mono Lake. This is the perfect location to have a 24-70 zoom. Tomorrow I will drive to Bodie. Keep the test going. Where are the Big Bronco images?

Interesting.

Once we start shooting with 100MP+ sensors, advantages prime lenses have right will become more apparent, especially towards the edges of the frame.

Just depends upon how one wants to rationalize. Weight in the hand while shooting is another way to look at it, which of course vastly favors the primes vs a huge zoom.
The rendering of this zoom based on the images that Guy has posted are very enticing though. This certainly lives up to the Minolta G heritage with regard to rendering, which is impressive combined with the resolution.

Yea agree that's the thing that has its little hook on me is how this lens is rendering. It's very good and that alone puts thoughts in your head about this mix of lenses you may want to support it and also thinking well I don't want to take it everywhere you go so where is the balance in your kit with regards to many factors like size and weight in that bag. I'm thinking if any prime it maybe should be the fastest lens one can get like a 1.4. Right now I have a L21 and GM 85 so what the heck do I put in the middle of that. Is it one prime or two primes. I want my Loxia 50 back or do I, would the 55 be better. Not fond of the 28 but it gaps well. First world problems I know.

Heading to Sedona today with my wife , daughter and grandson so I'm hoping to get some shots in today. Run my wall test early Wednesday and just see how good this thing is. I'm pretty impressed by these shots as a lot are wide open and handheld with really good detail. I tend to test a lens pretty hard so we know its limits.
