How good is the Sigma MC11 with the Canon 70-300 IS II in low light? It performs badly on the metabones v. Just wondering if the mc11 will be any different?

It worked fine for anything you did not need to track. Small movements and stills it performed fine. For tracking anything that was moving faster then a slow walk it was not good.

Please Help me before I send my camera back to Sony.
So I've read about the issues with Eye AF with cameras that start with 337 (mine is one of those).
But I think my problem might be a bit different.
I'm shooting with Canon lenses + Sigma MC-11. I have no experience with Sony cameras, it is my first day trying this.
(Back button focus enabled, AF on shutter disabled) While on AF-C, when I hold both "AF on" or Eye-AF buttons, the camera will track the subject, very quickly and responsive. As soon as I press the shutter, the focus will lock, and AF will not work unless I release the shutter.
It will only work (slowly) if I'm shooting in Drive mode: Continuous Lo. Mid or Hi/HI+ will not use AF.

Is this behaviour normal? Is the camera possibly faulty, or do I need to adjust the settings?
The MC-11 is up to date.

Here's a video:

So far with lastest firmware on MC 11 & A7rIII af works fine in good light with the Canon 24-105, poor light so so. The Sig C 150-600 also snaps fast to AF in good light, no experience yet with poor light. Haven't tried my Canon TC on it yet.
Also the Canon 17-40 works fine in good light, no experience yet in poor light.

Many more Canon L lenses to test.

The MC-11 with a non-A9 body can indeed AF-C on all frames with adapted Canon glass only if you shoot in Continuos Lo. If you want 10+ fps the only choice other than going native would be to use a Sigma officially supported lens.

Thank you for your reply, I was waiting for someone to share their experience.

So the AF will just freeze? I thought It would try to hunt for focus, not just stop working.

Here's short clip explaining it

So just to confirm, with an A9 you can use 10 and 20FPS and have AF-C continue to work unlike what we see in the above video with the A7III?

Also, are there any AF modes (Zone, Wide, Expand Spot etc..) that aren't available with adapted Canon lenses with the MC-11 on the A9?

Wide, Center and Flexible spot are available. The rest are not. This is for my A7III

I saw on The Brotographer's youtube channel he mentioned shooting low FPS with mc-11 and canon glass. But he did not say if the higher FPS modes work at all.

that1cameraguy specifically tested the A9 and it works (not perfectly, but the AF does work) while on MID and HI.

What it is surprising, is how many of this reviewers don't say anything about it.

I will be going to a Sony store today and test some native glass, I'll see if the AF behaves differently.

Thanks for the info. I was hoping to get the MC-11 over the Metabones just for cost reasons. Mostly I will just adapt my 16-35/4 and 24-70/4 and then I don't need FPS and focus will be on mostly non-moving things. However, I was hoping to try adapting my 400DOII and I would hope for 10FPS working at least and decent AF-C tracking. My research has revealed that most recommend the Metabones for Canon glass but it seems to change with every FW update so is always a moving target and most reviews I find are likely outdated due to new FW.

I just tried native Sony lens. AF works continuously in all modes and HI+ FPS.

The guy at the Sony store said the adaptor has FPS limitations.

Yes, the only way to be absolutely sure to have 10fps with AF-C full time AF and tracking on an A7III is to go native. I'm reading around the web many reports that Sigma glass officially supported by the MC-11 can do 10fps+AF even on the A7III, but I haven't tested myself to check if It's true and how good it works vs a real native lens.

As to the better adaptor for Canon glass, things are mixed as best and it really depends on the lens, the fw version, the light etc. So even buying the more expensive Metabonex is not a guarantee for absolute success..

Can you please link the reports where Sigma glass works at 10fps?
Jason lanier and the brotographer both do single shot every time, you can see them pressing the shutter each time they take a pic.

Sure, is this thread right here on FM, first page: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1538808

At least two users are reporting of being able to shoot at 10fps+AF-C on non-A9 bodies with Sigma supported glass and the MC-11 (unless I totally misunderstood).

I tested the Metabones V and the MC-11 on my 400 DO II last night. Both adapters are installed with the latest firmwares. I was surprised that the MC-11 was better in AF than the Metabones adapter using the a9. With and without the 1.4X TC, the 400mm DO II could AF faster than with the Metabones V using the a9. I tried the Metabones in green mode and advance mode. It was still not as good as the MC-11. The test was done indoors so the light was not fantastic. That said, I am doubtful the MC-11 with the 400mm DO II is siutable for BIF. Maybe for slow moving birds

Yes, you are totally right. I did some research and indeed ART lenses do support 10FPS + AFC-C and, if I'm correct, AF during video.

I guess Sigma is really focused on targeting their ART line after all. Shame the don't focus on improving AF for Canon glass like Metabones does.

Thanks for the info. I ordered an mc-11 today and later next week will give it a try and report back how it goes on the A9.

I have the following lenses to try:
24-70/4
16-35/4
100-400II
100L Macro
400DOII
600/4 II

I’m not expecting miracles but hoping the two normal zooms will work. Don’t care about the 100-400 as I have the GM. Would love if the 400DOII worked. I don’t have much hope for the 600II. Read bad things about the 100 macro. Anyways will see for myself soon enough😎

This may be of interest to you. I tested the a9 with the Canon 600mm f4 II last night and AF worked fine on contrasty subjects. Not super fast but decent given the low light. There was hunting for low contrast subjects as is to be expected. With the 1.4X TC, AF was still working but was not so accurate/decisive. This was with the MC-11.

This morning, I tried the same combo again and was pleasantly surprised with the AF performance of the a9 on the 600mm. On the bare lens, AF was fast. It was still fast with the 1.4X TC but slightly hesitant in some situations. Even with the 2X TC, I could get quite accurate and fairly fast AF. Test images were sharp. IS worked fine on the lens. Obviously daylight shooting in good light will bring out the best of the a9/600mm combo. I am now confident of using the a9 on my 600mm. The only thing I did not test is BIF(my a9 is only a few days old ). I suspect it will work with the bare lens. Fyi, the focus area is limited to Wide, Centre and Flexi Spot with the MC-11.

With regards to the 100mm IS macro, I am getting very fast and precise AF. Also the AF will work nicely on the 16-35mm f4 but I found that wide open, the images were noticeably underexposed. Stopping down to f5 helped.

Hope the above helps.

I recently purchased an MC-11 to use with Tamron SP 35/1.8 and 45/1.8 lenses on an A7R III. To my surprise and delight, Eye AF works with both lenses. The MC-11 is running firmware 1.11. I'm wondering if it's worth updating to version 1.13 or whether I'm better off leaving well alone. In other words, is a newer version of the firmware likely to break existing functionality?
