If this Sigma adapter does exactly as advertised than you automatically get 18 Native functioning lenses from the Sigma camp. I bought two of them and I'm counting on it working with all the native AF functions of the camera like the A7rII and a6300. If this works our lens choices just increased a truck load.

Again, I am referring to mount converters similar to that of Sigma MC-11 that can convert lenses as if they were native FE lenses and NOT adapters. I better change the terminology I used in the previous post .
In theory, it should be possible for lenses that are designed to receive its firmware updates through camera body or a docking device. Sigma is "updating" the firmware of the lens momentarily while the lens is mounted on MC-11. By luck or genius, Sigma already had these lenses built to receive permanent firmware updates via USB dock. My guess is that the other Sigma lenses are not capable of firmware updates in a similar fashion and therefore won't have Native behavior with MC-11.
Similarly, I am not sure a 3rd party like Metabones or Sigma can unlock and "update" Canon lens firmware as they are mounted on MC-11, even if such Canon lens can receive firmware update through the camera. Canon obviously has little incentive to make that capability available.
I am not sure if any of the A mount lenses (legacy or SSM) have the firmware update capability. If not, A-mount lenses might not be able to ever catch up fully to MC-11 like capabilities. I hope I'm wrong on that.
What's baffling to me is how Sigma figured out a way to see all of the native AF options of like the A7rII and Metabones has not. I have a great sampling of why you want these native AF options on a shoot I did this week and I need to process it and post a thread about this because it's a pretty powerful reason you want these extra AF options you can't get with the Metabones adapters . Hopefully I can get to it soon. The Metabones is nice to get Canon lenses over to work with Sony bodies but it's limited too. Sure it's fast but your missing a few very powerful AF options, not to mention just Eye AF alone but flexible expandable spot is seriously a great tool missing on the MB. Sigma might turn out to be genius here.

Frankly, they are a few that I am interested in and even then, I am not convinced I would get them, for sure not right away. In general, these Sigma lenses are big and heavy. For sure a departure from the mirrorless idea, although optically they are great performers. With the same token, Sony G lenses are also not that small either. But at least you don't need any adapter .
The Sigma 20mm f/1.4 is high on my list; I almost pulled the trigger but after stopping by at the Zeiss booth the other day, I am confident that an ultra wide angle Batis (probably an 18mm) is on its way and to be announced soon. Focal length-wise, it would fit better to my Batis 25mm and at f/2.8 it would be slower, but significantly lighter and smaller than the Sigma 20mm f/1.4. The Sigma 24-105mm f/4 as a walk-around lens but it is big and heavy and that at f/4. I know I have to pay approximately double the price for the Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 G Master lens but maybe the G Master lens is still worth it. I saw an image taken by a Sony employee with that lens that blew me away resolution-wise. But, I won't be an early adopter on this. I will wait until this summer and see whether the price is softer. Lastly, the Contemporary version of the 150-600mm. Well, no counterpart on the Sony side for this but I do not need it until July for a trip to Costa Rica. So, I will wait for reviews how the adapter works with this lens before jumping in.

It's really buying time in a way. Good news is the money is cheap I spent 1550 dollars total on a 24-35 and 35 1.4. To me that buys me time until other lenses come onto the market. The 35 1.4 is slightly bigger and heavier in total than the Sony 35 1.4 really it's marginal. The 24-35 is a truck but you get 3 wide F2 lenses for 800 bucks. Even if I sold it a month from now I'm still ahead. Until there is a complete full line of high quality smaller lenses out there that may fit us better than we are stuck playing this waiting game. I need to work so for me I have little options but do we really know when or if the Batis 18 comes or a Batis 35 or a 135 F2. Hard to wait on a wish list at least for me t is. Everyone has different thresholds of waiting. I have zero. Lol
Of course we all know the longer you wait fora Sony product on the market the price drops. It's a little tough to throw 2200 at a 24-70 zoom when it's really not your primary glass now if it was 1800 tops than I may jump faster but I'm really buying time on it with the 24-35 as I can use it for 5 months wait for the GM to drop in price and switch it out , pretty much the same weight and bulk. Is the Sony GM better I have no doubts but is the Sigma 24-35 no slouch than that answer is it's pretty damn good and it buys time until maybe the GM drops in price. Just look at the A7rII there flagship body, today you can grab one at 2700 instead of 3200 that's 500 dollars in a pretty short time. The 85 GM is a different story for me because it's very much a primary lens so I'll get that on release and find a thousand couches to search for quarters. Lol
It looks like you can update the MC-11 adapter with a USB port, no dock required. Since the adapter takes over operating the lens, I wonder if you need to update the firmware on the lens. I may hold off purchasing the dock, although no big deal to buy one. Also wondering if they may allow updating the lens firmware through the adapter since it can mount to the lens and connects to computer with USB port.

Same feelings here about any of the f1.4/f1.2 lenses out there. I don't want that weight for shooting weddings and I don't need an extra 2/3 to 1 stop of light these days. I'm in love with the entire line of Nikon f1.8 lenses, fast, sharp and very light, not to mention easy on the pocket book too.

You use Nikon manual lenses with your Alpha body? I was considering this as I ponder the lack of weight savings in some of my adapted lens choices. I'm not one for F1.2 bokeh, either, and I don't need that kind of low-light performance. How is the expertise with Nikon? Thanks

I'm not using any Nikon lenses on my a7RII yet. I just got it but I would love to be able to use my Nikon f1.8 AF lenses on the Sony and retain full AF. That would be a dream and save me a ton of money too.
So I was considering the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM but it looks actually bigger than the Sony 24-10 f/4 DG OS HSM Art. Age old Canon tradeoff. I could get the 35 ART + 24-105 + MC-11 for less and continue to also adapt my Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II. A lot to think about since I'm still shooting Canon as well.
I don't think Metabones will be able to duplicate this because they are stuck translating from Sony to Canon.
Sigma I think is really disabling the internal translator in their lens and causing the lens/mount combo to accept native E-mount. I know it seems like the same thing but its can be very subtly different which is why it may work better. Sigma obviously has a huge experience of supporting Nikon, Canon, Sigma, and Sony A mount translation onto one lens platform.
Does anyone know if this adapter will atleast control aperture on the Canon TSE lenses? I have sigma lenses, so I will get this, but if it also works with my Canon TSEs it will be interesting looking its QC over the Metabones as well.

I bought the Sigma 24-35 F2 for the zoom end over the GM 24-70 at least for now but it was a savings of 1200 with the adapter. I also got a sigma 35 1.4 art as well. Total price was about 1700 for both lenses and adapter. If the 24-70 turns out to be something very special than I may switch but that lens is not out and I need to work today. So I'll buy time until even the 24-70 drops in price. 2200 for a secondary lens for me is tough to spend. If it gets down a few hundred than I'll weigh my options.
