p.38 #1 · Announced: RX1R II with 42MP sensor and EVF

What are those of you who have received or are about to order the RX1Rii doing about a protector for your LCDs?

Sony makes a screen protector that shows as an accessory to the RX1, but there isn't one shown for the RX1Rii. I have Sony LCD screen protectors on my A7R and A6000.

I can confirm that the Sony F20M works perfectly on the RX1RII with the pop-up EVF. Can't say about the new Metz as it's not available yet.

Sony lists the RX1R II using the same screen protector as the RX1, A7rII, etc. not the one for the a7 mark 1 bodies.

Thanks, I just ordered that one. I'm not sure why B&H doesn't show it as an accessory to the RX1Rii.

I was mainly wondering whether other users think using the screen protector is advisable and I've seen some advertised that are supposedly made with "optical glass" and coated to boot and was curious whether anyone thought those were preferable. I decided I'm over thinking this simple accessory and just ordered the Sony.

I have the camera for only a day and so far I'm very impressed with the AF. Huge improvement from the RX1R and reason enough to upgrade IMO. The EVF is also very good even without the rubber piece.

My images at f/2 are tack sharp and my lens is well centered.
Regarding the new aspect ratios (4:3 and 1:1), it's a nice way to aid composition in camera for a equiv. approx. 38mm and 50mm FLs. I was surprised that Lightroom keeps the aspect ratio but also makes the entire 3:2 image available for further cropping/tweaking if needed.

The new menu system is very similar to the A7RII. I can pretty much mimic the same settings for both cameras.

I noticed that when tilting the LCD monitor with the EVF closed, I can touch it to my chest and it does not turn off. Very nice for low angle shooting.

I could not figure out a way to change the exposure steps from 1/3 to 1/2. I don't think this option is available for the RX1RII since the manual aperture ring has 1/3 steps.

The files are very similar to the A7RIIs. All my LR presets and sharpening settings apply to both cameras.

The code to bring archived threads back to the live forum is broken at the moment. I'm working on a solution.

This is great news, as I'm constantly taking pictures of my kids at low angles and find it frustrating to have the screen go black half the time while shooting.

This is great. I was worried because there were some reports on getdpi that the files were soft wide open.

I just posted three wide-open shots on the RX1 Image Thread but I don't know if they'd show you anything. I think the lens is sharp wide open.

Thanks Fred,

What are your thoughts on the integrity of the EVF? It has some inherent almost wobble to it.. just afraid in 2-3 years after a few inevitable even minor knocks its gonna go wrong... or maybe just unreasonable fear .

Now to find a case for it...

Serge, I saw that you had the Leica Q before. What's your reason for going to the RX1RII now?

to be perfectly honest i couldnt justify keeping it for a few reasons:

1) i love my ricoh GR and $300-400 vs 4k
2) 28mm is not my focal length, 35 is
3) camera has a great size, but not rx1 great...
4) sensor puts out great colors, handles everything well, but DR is inferior and banding was showing up. Not to the point of where i was upset with it on a regular basis to be honest, more of like i spent 4k and this is happening issue
5) bugs

that being said Leica Q simply has a superior shooting experience, better color, better AF (this rx1r2 lens is noisy!), quite better EVF in terms of replicating OVF feel altho corners are worse, better battery and its downright sexy

BUT for 1k cheaper, 35mm being my focal length, getting a cutting edge 42mp sensor and a smaller more discreet shooting experience (tiltable LCD!) i went for rx1r2. Not sure if i'll keep it yet to be perfectly honest, but with the leica i was at the point of thinking... a canon 6d with a compact 35mm or 28mm lens on quiet shutter mode is MORE OR LESS as discrete as the leica so why am i bothering.

Of course these are my personal notes

I really think it comes down to 28mm vs 35mm and working with shortcomings of other cameras (or choosing things like leica color and experience, etc and compromising with 28mm i guess)

.... one thing im certain of, im broke now

Sounds like more or less the same conclusion as mine. I also value 35mm, tiltable LCD and small size more. I adore the Leica Q colors/tonality though. I think they're much more pleasing looking than Sony. However, focal length preference remains the most important thing in the end.

The "colors and tonality" the "Q" has over the RX1rII.
Can't it be corrected in Photo Shop or Lightroom ?

I probably will and have your thread bookmarked.

The funny thing is that I ended up with 2 RX1RII cameras. I pre-ordered one from B&H Photo and my wife pre-ordered one from another store (for my birthday). Poor girl, she wanted to make a surprise.
