Talking about reach, I keep both a 1.7x TCEII and a 1.4x TCEII in my bag for when I need the extra reach, which is on a lot of occasions. So I usually keep the 1.4 tc on the 200-500f/5.6 most of the time, and if light is excellent I switch to the 1.7x and shoot that combo at mostly f/11-f/13 a whole lot more keepers on a monopod or tripod for best results as focus becomes a bit tricky, but with good technique you could nail some excellent ones.
Here are a couple recent examples with a D750, photos taken in Neotropical Trinidad & Tobago. In the next couple of weeks, I hope to be able to share some results with the D500.
