Dark when I got home with the new D500 but this is gobsmacking. Superb low noise and pin-sharp at 100%. Shot at home ;- D500 w. 200-500 @ 210mm - f5.6 - 1/400 - 40,000 ISO. SOOC, this is the full low-res jpg.

If all my 40,000 ISO shots come out like this then f5.6 is irrelevant and birding takes on a new perspective.

I have the same wireless router. Now that you have been shooting with the D500 and the 200-500, I have a question. I would really like to hear if there are any noticeable differences ibetween shooting the 200-500 with a D500 vs a D7200.

Taking fps out of the equation does the lens perform better and do you get more keepers with the D500. If you could choose between a D7200 and a 300 f2.8 with a TC or a D500 and a 200-500 lens (shooting at the longer end), which would choose (ignore cost).

The D500's about 20% faster focusing, but I can crop the files about 20% more with the D7200.
Workin' on my 'monkey settings, so disregard comps./clips...the D500's a joy to behold.

new sensor check...100% crop

Great shots Will. Does the 200-500 focus faster with the D500 or the D810?

Thanks, Birdie About 20% faster with the D500. I still prefer the bokeh
shootin' this zoom with the D810. Choices, choices

Ok, that it, I'm ordering a D500, thanks a lot Will

Kidding aside, you mention 20% faster, what about hit rate and tracking, any improvement over the 7200? Are you using single point, 9 or group AF on your BIF's?

This photo started out as a "grab shot", taken through our balcony window when I noticed the male of our pair of nesting Chestnut Breasted Mannikins in the bushes outside. The 200-500VR was mounted on my D750 so I simply grabbed it and fired off a burst of three images before the bird took off. Not particularly impressed with my captures, I imported them into LRCC, did a little PP and decided to keep the image. When I posted it to my Flickr site I was amazed to have it invited to "Flickr Explore".... I was not sure I would even keep it!

I guess you never know how the public will view your photos...

Here's another shot showing some "nest building"... ISO climbed to 5000 for this one

D75_9573 by David Hamments, on Flickr

and finally.... two more with an even higher ISO..... 5600 and 12800

Cheers and good light,

That "20%" would be inclusive of acquisition/tracking...would be pointless having one
w/o the other for BIF. Been very pleased with 25 pt (no more 9) and Group AF,
depends on the scenario as to my selection. You know you want one, Mike

Nikon 200-500mm and D500 are a great combo IMHO. Some of these posted on D500 thread.

My handler gave me permission to order one of these, it arrived Friday. I took for a walk yesterday, slow bird, good to practice on. I think it is a heavy lens, where I walk it's about 5 miles to where I see birds. D800, handheld, VR off (read it works better for BIF if it's off). I like the lens, great value...I need to find a kid who will carry it for me.
