Is your disdain because you lack the skills (glass) to shoot BIF,
or is it simply more 'pot stirring'?? I find it relaxing and good
practice for when something of merit comes along. YMMV

Seriously, not all of us are into mug shots of birds / animals. I just ordered this lens for work for clients in ski areas, long compressed land / snowscapes, ski & snowboard action shots in double black terrain that taking anything larger would be a serious liability, etc.
I think it is a great lens but agree, the sheer amount of dead-center-of-the-frame static bird snaps is a bit overwhelming.

Birds happen to be the most common subject available for wildlife photographers to shoot. And the dead-center-of-the-frame shots happen to be the best way to show how well this lens resolves detail.

As to the static Bird shots....as mine is flying I don't really have a bird in this fight :-)), but I can't help but say I really enjoy the static shots. It shows me what the lens is capable of if the guy or gal behind the lens gets everything right. If you can manage the light, shutter speed, and the tracking then your shots of moving objects should reach the same level of detail, colors, bokah, etc. as the static shots. Therefore either one shows the capability of the lens AND some of them are just gorgeous IMO.
Just another opinion :-)

I have a test shot of a mountain scene about mid-pack on the previous page, shot within an hour of getting the lens via fedex from Lensrentals. I have another one from an actual assignment I could show I'll wrangle when I get home. I get the want to see how sharp it is thing, but like eating cheerios, a bowl will suffice, a bathtub full will possibly drown said cereal eater, anything else in that there pantry?... And I never use these kinds of web shots to make a purchase evaluation, too many variables, often too cropped and to be honest, dead center does not tell me nearly enough about what the lens is doing everywhere else, hence my renting before buying it. I ordered it from B&H last night, gets here the day I send the rental back.
As for wildlife, I have a little bit in my repertoire but they were shot with glass between 35-100mm, close to the animal and yet show a sense of place, context, you know, like you actually see published in Nat Geo, that kind of shot. A lot of these bird shots that seem to get rivers of praise remind me of the little faux stuffed birds my wife got us to put on our Christmas tree, no context, no story and certainly no sense of place.
I mean....all opinions are welcome, right? Or is FM like every other enthusiast forum in that it is in bad form to not agree with the masses of praise...?

Well this isn't NG, is it? What does story have to do with lens performance? Don't like the images posted in context with the subject of this thread, then go read a NG. This happens to be a GEAR forum, not a PRESENTATION forum.

All opinions are welcome, just as are counter-opinions. Absolutely nothing wrong with your opinion on this subject being in the minority.

So the praise should actually be more along the lines of:
"Nice lens guys"
"Sharp lens Joe!"
"That's a really nice lens there, keep the lenses coming folks"

I was going to post the shot I referenced earlier but when I came home to find the jay's cackling, I grabbed the D810, TC-14III and the 200-500 and decided to have a little fun.
Photography is about great photos and fun....
I'll leave FM on this note. The weather for a shoot using the moon last night socked us in, involved skiing half way down a double black diamond run to line up the full moonrise with the tram cars in the foreground. The 200-500 + TC14III and a D810 was a perfect fit for this, light and easy to take around, nice balance on a tripod. So the only other shot I have to share besides my Fargo-headed Stellar's Jay is this one shot for United Airlines advertising service on high season routes extending into the off season into our ski town. I needed to leave lots of space in between the plane and mountain for text, the 200-500 nailed it. I used to have a 200-400 but found I almost never used it because even that was too big for a lot of the light and fast approach I needed to employ to come home with the shot.
The 200-500 is Nikon's best sleeper lens in a long, long time, I love that fact I can even use it on my F100, F3 and FM3A because it does not stop down to a rather useless minimum aperture. So on this note, I am outta' here to leave it to you all to enjoy it in whatever capacity you desire.

Dang, I never noticed it. Guess I will have to open my eyes next time I head out that way. Kinda looks like the third dude may have b-slapped the fourth guy and fourth guy got his retribution. Other than that, they are kinda chilling.

Hope all understand that we post what we shoot . I wanted to try the 200-500 with an extension tube on the hummingbirds . The bees showed up in their place. Now, I would not want to chase the bees often with the 200-500 as well it can get a bit heavy trying to keep up with these unpredictable little ones. I was very pleasantly surprised how quick it would focus on such a tiny target provided I could get it in the view finder and keep it there. Sometimes a little assist with the focus ring was needed, but it would quickly lock on.
So if bees or birds are not to ones liking, just please ignore this post.
