Umm...it was a joke sir.

I was going to post the shot I referenced earlier but when I came home to find the jay's cackling, I grabbed the D810, TC-14III and the 200-500 and decided to have a little fun.

Photography is about great photos and fun....

I'll leave FM on this note. The weather for a shoot using the moon last night socked us in, involved skiing half way down a double black diamond run to line up the full moonrise with the tram cars in the foreground. The 200-500 + TC14III and a D810 was a perfect fit for this, light

OK, I like the bird shots better than plane shots to be honest. BUT, I am kind of envious that you made it to "Imagemaster's" hide list in less than a week. It took me months to get there!!😝

I already have a backpack that can take 200-500 but wonder how would you carry a camera with 200-500 if you don't want to use backpack.
I have a trip later on this year that will require me to carry 200-500 for around 3-4 hours hike at a time but I would rather have the camera out rather than in my backpack.

Good captures, Birdie, although two of them look like too-centred bee-birds.

I just carry the camera in my hand, lens facing down, like any other lens. The 200-500/D810 combo is just around 3 kg., so it doesn't really feel much heavier than the same camera with a 70-200 f/2.8. I've used it as a walk-around combo on a few occasions now, just for kicks, and that works just fine. Here's one from today's walk:

A sling strap works well for me for my 80-400 which is about 3/4 the weight and size.
I use a BlackRapid strap but there are several other good options. Obviously it needs to be fastened to the lens collar not the camera body.

I caught this Comb Crested Jacana looking over its shoulder as a "saltie" just splashed into the water about 25 meters behind it.... while this lens shines close up, it's not too shabby resolving detail at distance as well. This little fella was about 50 meters away...

I asked the same question. Now I use a Black Rapid like strap ($14) and a tether (6$), just to be on the safe size.

Thanks kdrk888, pwschladen and Jorgen for suggestion. I do have Carry Speed strap that I used for my camera sometimes but never tried mounting a lens on it instead of the camera. Will need to give that a try.

Went down to the Sleepy Hollow Bosque this morning, to fine tune the zoom.
They tried to fly into the camera wagon, no doubt looking to land on my new
metal hood. Hope the dust has settled and I can 'get away' with boid shots.

Thanks, Birdie! If I didn't tell, one might think I used the 500 f4...stopped down.

Appreciate it, Greg. Love my "test" targets...out in the
fresh air AND good light. Took me about 3 minutes...
like my last one, it was already pretty close. +2 FTW

Hello fellow FMer's,

I am in the market for the reach of a 500mm and initially was thinking I would be looking for a nice copy of the Nikkor 500mm f/4 P IF-ED. Then I came across this thread and am noticing all the nice images you all have been posting here I was wondering if any of you have had the opportunity to compare this new 200-500 f5.6 with the Legacy 500P? How did they compare in regards to IQ, ergonomics, etc?

Sadly I can't afford the new 500 AFS VR's without losing my wife, so I have decided to limit my search to these two lenses.

Also, I'd be using these with my Nikon Df. Will these work well together?

Thanks for sharing any insight with me

Best wishes to all,
No Regrets

I personally couldn't live with MF at this FL.
What I have compared is the IQ of the 200-500 to my 500 f4 VR
Both excellent wide open, the zoom having almost prime bokeh in good light
and killer VR...also, the zoom zooms. The prime has much faster AF and takes
TC's well but one pays a LOT to gain that stop. Today, someone looking for native
500mm has their prayers answered with this latest offering...200-499 is a bonus.

Thank you for your reply! It sounds like this new lens would be a "no brainer"

Do you think the 200-500mm would work well with my Df, especially if using the TC-14EIII in regards to autofocus capabilities?

Many thanks,

^ You should be fine. I don't care for using TC's w/slow zooms
but several here are getting great results employing them on FX.
Look for images by birdied here and on the N&W Forum.
