It’s cold in here and dark too. Received my TC 14E III last week. I got the TC for birds in good light but it is cloudy almost every day.
Shot this today from the backyard. A result I would expect my Tammy [now sold] would probably have yielded at its long end in similar conditions.
    @700mm, handholding is not easy
Didn’t find any difference in AF speed with 14E III

Expecting some decent light tomorrow afternoon for a more detailed shoot.

thanks a lot, Bill. I was a little LONG with the DX body...but I was out shootin'
Sandhills and just happened on the youth rodeo by chance. I was impressed with
the AF (shooting tight) as the kids raced by. Great lens

Funny how different people see different things in the same photograph. My first thought? "What? No helmet?"

Sorry for the cross post.. but this deserves a place in this thread too

I had this guy last winter on a tree next to our bedroom window and he's back again! So glad to see him and this time shooting with 200-500! Can't wait to get my 1.4 TC...

I agree with your assessment. I think with the TC14 is similar IQ as the Tamron at 600mm.
And yes, hard to hand hold at 700mm! lol

But I am not sure, whether a heavy crop from a D810 [DX mode] would suffice for the reach ! This lens is crop friendly for sure, especially when coupled with D810.
One such shot and is a heavy crop!

First off, great shot!

Yes, I get what your saying and you're right, this lens has the resolving power to crop in. Not always the case with a zoom. I'm sure the D810 is at play here a bit to in the crop-ability.

I guess the question is if the TC in DX mode with a small crop will yield better results than a shot in DX mode with a larger crop. When I was shooting the af-s 300 f4, I'd always take the TC/lens combo in good light because I found that was the better path. Obviously that was on a prime so naturally there will better resolving power there.

Short answer, no. You lose at least a stop, with slower AF as well. I personally never shoot the D810/800's
in DX mode but I'll do 1.2 for the 1 add'l fps. The beauty of this zoom is 500mm @f5.6 will yield prime-like
IQ. 100% crops are insane...

In lieu of a TC, try a D7200...750mm FOV and f5.6

Shot with my mom's D7000 and 200-500 mm. The D7000 is one of those Nikon bodies people love to hate, for largely imaginary reasons. But it's a reliable workhorse with astonishingly good high-ISO behavior. Plus it's now dirt cheap. If you're just looking to get into bird photography, this sub-$2,000 combo is definitely worth a look.
