Grabbed a couple of low-light handheld shots this afternoon. The files "pop" a bit less than what I'm used to from the f/4 500 VR, but they required no extravagant processing either.

Cool shots everyone.
Nice to see a variety of photographers with this lens.
Here are a couple of people shots with the D750.
Bride and groom.
The first at 400mm, the second at 500mm.
Both at 5.6.

Got my second copy yesterday and put it to the test today.
D7100 with 200-500 f5.6 all handheld and most are fairly large crops.
All are at 500mm wide open at f5.6

Here's a good test for AF speed and accuracy. Coal tits are one of the faster moving local chickadees, and I had no trouble nailing the eye with single-point AFC, just as I'd expect to be able to with other Nikon teles.

Perhaps a stupid question, but I scrolled some pages back and couldn't find it.
What happened with your first copy?
First copy back focused at long distances so I sent it back and got a second copy. I could have adjusted AF in camera but didn't think I should have to. This second copy is spot on.

Incredible work on these pages. Just dipping my toe into the 500mm focal length. Been a lot of learning curve and definitely a different way of 'seeing'. Just a few randoms from the past few days.

All very nice shots. But 500mm, on APS-C, and you were cropping heavily?? Did you take these from the moon?

When I get home I'll post up a SOOC image for reference but I was about 150' away.
Yeah, wildlife seldom lets you get very close. 600mm on my D7200 and I'm still croppin' (900mm FOV)
Unless you're in a blind, or shooting from a vehicle...these suckers will book up quick! 40-60 yds is a way of life.

So I've taken 350+ shots over the last 2 days at our local eagles nest and have decided the 200-500 is a keeper. Just a little bit better than the Tamron 150-600 in all respects, not a huge difference but every little bit helps! I think with the TC1.4 on it and at 700mm the IQ is roughly the same as the Tamron at 600mm but slower AF and you have to deal with F8.

So far I've taken some sharp in-focus shots with the 200-500 F/5.6E at 400mm--500mm and further out distances (50 yards plus), which was my primary goal in trading out the 80-400G (which served me very well). I'm posting this image because at the closer ranges the 80-400G did so well at, this new lens also is performing well by my expectations.
