Stopped by the local camera shop today and yeah, walked out with one.

I almost pulled the trigger on the tamron(again) this morning, especially being that they can be had for $699(ebay, USA copy) after rebate. Hell of a bargain.

On the way home I stopped really quick and took some down in dirty shots with the new lens.

I'm hoping to get out most of the day tomorrow.

So far I've taken some sharp in-focus shots with the 200-500 F/5.6E at 400mm--500mm and further out distances (50 yards plus), which was my primary goal in trading out the 80-400G (which served me very well). I'm posting this image because at the closer ranges the 80-400G did so well at, this new lens also is performing well by my expectations.

Nice shot Bill, just curious if this is a crop or the full 36mp. Very good feather detail you had good light.

To me, the Sigma 150-600S seems to outperform the Nikon 200-500 in terms of AF speed and sharpness but it costs $600 more than the Nikon and it's heavier than the Nikon but the Sigma has 100 mm more reach than the Nikon. A tough decision.

I'm still Amazed at how close 500-600mm doesn't get me.

I'm enjoying everyone's really nice shots with this lens.
After scouting for an upcoming shoot I drove by Sandy Beach and noticed the early morning sun was backlighting the waves.
Decided to stop and photograph a few boogie boarders.
All handheld at 500mm, iso800 with a Nikon d750.

Should've mentioned it's a pretty heavy crop. Not sure how much that impacts the IQ on here..

Yes, good light sure helps. Can't say that I ever got really sharp shots w the 80-400G either without solidly good light.

nice shot will. but somehow i dont think this lens is the best in your armoury.
it just does not seem as sharp as your 300 f4 and converter or your sigma sport in my opinion.

Thanks, definitely likes my D810 better. Still screwin' around with different combo's
and the Sig Sport remains my fave. They'll both get a good workout (in better light)
at BdA next week. Stay tuned...

Was watching some bald eagles in a tree overlooking coots for a few hours with no action this afternoon.

This bad bird flew over though

City deer, my back yard. Further away (50 yards) in lower light (drizzling) but at 310mm.

i had to opt for the sigma c as i have health problems and need to travel as light as possible but i am enjoying it paired with my gripped d7100. (i have set the os to dynamic. it makes a big difference).
i was thinking of moving to the 7200 in the new year but a little hesitant as the buffer seems to be the only real improvement (i rarely shoot bursts of shots).
plus, you can bet your last dollar that as soon as i upgrade a d7300 or d400 will be announced!
i would trade my back up body (gripped d7000) for one before it becomes too obsolete to sell.
out of interest, how do you find the crop mode on the d810?

I always found the crop modes awkward for framing so I don't use it. What's the only real benefit? I think it's just the speed increase because I think cropping the FF picture in post will have the same effect right?

I believe the D7200 has not only some AF benefits but also sensor benefits to. Most who moved from the D7100 to D7200 seemed quite happy.

I can't lie though, the D810 is in a league of it's own.

i wonder if a cropped d810 image is any better than an image from the d7200 and would i still see any benefit from its full frame sensor (low light performance).

From what I read you won't see any benefit in good light. The crop mode on the D810 is 15mp where the D7200 is 24mp. So naturally there's more MP on the subject with the crop than the FF.

The FF will start to play a factor when the light goes down though. The D7200 is no slouch in low light though. The D810 is not known for it's low light abilities but still will be better than the crop.

There's other issues at play with the sensor size but IMO most of it's splitting hairs when it comes to IQ.

I'm finding 3 or 4X FL preferable for nailing fast action at 500mm on da cropper...

I love the 1.2 crop mode on the D810, an add'l fps...and shots that look like this from 50 yds.
