My daughter's friend asked me to shoot a few shots of her dog on the beach... I really enjoyed capturing the obvious joy the dog displayed racing up and down Waikanae Beach, chasing the Oyster Catchers... tough ask for the D750 and 200-500VR being an almost pure black dog, moving very quickly, but the pair was up to the task IMHO...

Thanks! Someone else gave me exact same options. I have a smaller ape case, cheaper yet nicely built.
I’ll look into glass Taxi too!

Don't you want the option of having a body attached?

I have a bag that will do that. I probably have the wrong end of the stick but thought one of the bags being discussed above was this one
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/903044-REG/Ape_Case_ACPROLC18_Professional_Large_Lens.html

The TT 150 pouch has a similar function, slightly different design approach. Seems worth a look - if you need a lens only case.

Just got my 200-500 back from Nikon after I dropped it and broke the filter thread area. Didn't get a chance to get out anyplace so I just took some shots of the wintering Finches around the bird feeders. So far seems like everything came back in working order.

After missing it last year, I got back out to the Sheffield Mills eagle watch event yesterday. Put a new to me D7100 through its paces - the reach is definitely nice over the D610, but the files don't seem as crisp or punchy. That could just be because when I shot with the D610 two years ago we had much more light, so I'll have to get more experience with the D7100 and see how it handles ideal conditions. (Ideal in terms of exposure triangle and sharpness that is. In terms of beautiful photos, it's hard to beat these snow flurries.)

All of the below are shot with the D7100, 200-500 at 500mm, f5.6, ISO 400, and 1/1250 shutter.

New here. And a new owner of 200-500 too. Managed to click some pictures this weekend before it started snowing. Can someone tell me if I need some AF tune or this is the optimal sharpness? Camera: D7200.

Great capture! I love the colors, the details.... What camera body are you using with this lens?

Best Wishes,

Welcome ....... very glad to see you

Would you please edit this post to check the box that includes the EXIF data? Thank you.

1. Regarding AF tuning:

I am one who would tune it up. I suspect your lens is capable of more and you won’t know unless you tune it up.

I've had mine for about 3 years and tuned it *several* times….. only in the first year. Now, I know what it can do and I may never tune it again. After every take, I review each image at 100%.

Imo, although these two mallard images are nice, those eyes should be sharper; i.e. “tack” sharp, especially at that close range. I could be wrong. You may have punched the shutter button. And maybe someone else can tell you how the D7200 plays in all of this. I just do not know.

I *do* know there are many factors that go into a sharp image, and most “less than sharp” images are due to user error (which happens often) even with the most expensive glass.

If it is my newly acquired 200-500, I am tuning it. No question. Did you just buy it new? If so, with most vendors, you have 30 days to decide if you are going to keep it. I know that Steve Perry did not get the 200-500 he wanted until the 3rd copy. It was the 2nd copy for me.

And it is not as if you can't go back and change the AF point at any time you feel like changing it.

2. I really love this lens.

Pros: Versatility (that variable focal length!); Very sharp at *all* focal lengths: Some will tell you differently, but you must come to your own conclusions. And at less than $1500, the 200-500 is an absolute steal!

Con: AF is not that quick, even in bright light. I doubt anyone would say it is quick. However, the AF speed is sufficient (ample, very acceptable) for most users, including me. And BTW, after it acquires focus, it’s been my experience that it holds the subject.

I do have the 500 PF coming (pre-order), if for nothing else than maneuverability (agility) and lightness. I am looking forward to attaching that sharp, lightweight one to my D850 and D500. In the meantime, there is no hurry; with the 500PF I will be surrendering the versatility I have been so pleased with.

Thanks Robert!
You are spot on about the eyes not being tack sharp - I wanted an opinion from someone who has handled that lens a lot and you just confirmed my suspicion. I compared these images with some from my 70-300 and 200-500 is slightly off given lighting conditions and aperture are same.

I am afraid I don't have luxury of returning the lens since it was bought used. I went in knowing fully well that the 200-500 (or zoom lenses in general) are more susceptible to sample variation. I guess I will have to resort to AF tuning. Any technique that you may suggest to do so? Tuning this giant indoor is gonna be a pain

The 500PF sure sounds so tempting. In fact I contemplated about 300PF+TC combo but ultimately decided against it as a) I am purely a hobbyist and this is my first "serious" telephoto lens. 300/500 PF would have been too much of a lens for me, unable to take advantage of its capability b) 200-500 versatility is very tempting.

Again, thanks for warm welcome. I look forward to adding pictures here soon (especially of Hummingbirds frequenting my home). Regarding the EXIF though - the images were linked externally from imgur and checking the exif checkbox did nothing.. I will use image upload next time.
