I wonder how this turned out.

The merganser got it down though the tail was sticking out of its mouth for a bit while the headed digested to make more room in its stomach. Pretty crazy!

Okay, that's amazing. I was half expecting it to explode, like that boa in Florida (ingesting an alligator).

Well, after a brief play with a firend's 200-500 f5.6 I'm convinced, this lens is the bargain Nikon lens of the moment! My observations after a brief trial are:

AF speed is not as fast as the 80-400 but it still works very well as does VR. Sharpness is excellent as is overall IQ. A little bit of CA. Let these images tell the story. This particular lens may have exhibited a little front focus but I didn't have the time to do a AF Fine Tune and where it did focus, it's very sharp!

This is an Australian native bird called a Spotted Pardalote that we have been observing for the last 2 months whilst they have been building a nest in a hollow in a tree. They come to a branch outside the nest, watch to see if the coast is clear and then enter the nest. Firstly, they came with nest building materials and now they are coming back with food for their young. The bird is about 3.5 inches from tip of beak to tip of tail. One of my favourite birds due to it's beautiful colours and markings, especially the male.

D810 + 200-500 f5.6E VR, 1/250sec, f8, ISO1000 VR on, Monopod

Original - female Spotted Pardalote with food in it's beak for the young.

^^^^Beauty, all of them. Though, surely you feel this way, these uploaded images don't do justice to files you are viewing on monitor at home. But from all indications, this will sell like hotcakes at a stoner's convention. Not that any such thing exists :-)

Thank you for your kind comments, lsutigerfan. Much appreciated.

Yes, the original files do look better and this will be a BIG seller for Nikon, me thinks.

Fantastic shots Lance. Definitely shows that IQ won't be an issue for skilled photographers.

This lens doesn't have a coating that the "pro" lenses have. that coating is supposed to reduce the reflections. That is one of the reasons for the low price. Have any one notice this defect?

That's the nano coating. It's something I've been wondering about too. I've been using the 80-400mm AFS which does have nano coating. I shoot a lot of railroad trains, and flare from the headlights can become a major issue with some lenses. I'm curious how the new lens would handle it.

I think that readers of this thread will find the following post from NikonRumors interesting: http://nikonrumors.com/2015/09/26/nikon-af-s-nikkor-200-500mm-f5-6e-ed-vr-lens-field-test-review.aspx/#more-98241
This is the first post that reflects extensive use in challenging light and atmospheric conditions. There is a mix of action photography, long distance photography and backlit images. The author definitely suggests that the lack of nano-coating does result in a bit more flare when shooting backlit subjects... given the fact that I am currently using a non-nanocoat 200-400mm VR1, I've grown accustom to finding work-arounds or accepting the the flare as a part of the image

Yes, Bob, I'm going to give it a go with the new lens. I'll probably shoot two bodies - D800E with wide angle for an eclipse sequence including a landscape foreground and the D810 with the new 200-500 lens for some detailed close-ups.

Meanwhile, here is a shot from tonight with the 200-500 at 500mm in DX mode. Tripod mounted, M/UP, 3-second delay.

I continue to be very impressed with the lens and will be anxious to try some daylight BIFs to see how the AF works.

I just got this lens today. I have to say it's an impressive piece of glass. I love it. I tested only on some small trees around my house but from what I can see already this is an amazing lens for its price. I also tested it with the 1.4 TC III and it was equally amazing. I'll post some images later tomorrow.

Edit: I should add that I am actually comparing the VR on the 200-500 with my 200-400+1.4 TC on a monopod. Which makes it pretty darn impressive

Hey Architect, would it be possible to try the 1.4TC out on the 200-500mm and let us know the results. both close up and distance shots? Would love this to work really well as this would make it a VERY versatile lens.

Cheers

Simon

Great shots as usual Lance. Did you stop down to f8 for additional sharpness? Do you have any wide open shots of these birds for comparison?
