Gorgeous shots mlorenz26! The second last photo looks very, very good for a tc'ed shot. Were all the photos taken with the teleconverter? Also, in terms of AF speed, how does it fare with and without the tc compared to the 300mm f4? That seems to be the big discussion and unknown here - AF speed. Is it as fast as the 300mm bare, or a bit slower? Definitely looks like you've gotten the hang of your new gear quickly!

Thank you for the compliment. All were taken with the TC except one of the 500mm which was bare. Unfortunately the exif data won't show which is with and without. To me the AF speed is just about dead on with the 300 F4 with and without the TC. I haven't used my 300 f4 on my new D7200 yet cause I've been playing around with the 200-500 but with my D300s the two were just about dead on with each other. I would say the 300 f4 bare is slightly faster but not by much. Hope that helps.

Flickr's pretty simple - click the download button in the lower right hand of the image, select "view all sizes" and then click "original" for the largest image to display. Or you can just download it by clicking the image size above "view all sizes."
I did that, and it asks me to sign in with a Yahoo account. It also looks like I would be downloading it rather than simply viewing it. I just want to look at the damn image

You know what I think I just may have been confused. Cameralabs said: "The main image shows the complete scene at f5.6 to give you an impression of the angle of view and to judge vignetting." so I was expecting full sized D810 images. Then he goes on to say "100% crops from the center". So while I can't see this complete scene image anywhere, if the others are all 100% crops it explains my confusion when I looked at the original and thought it had been downsized, since a 100% crop would be far less resolution. If those are 100% crops that's pretty impressive.
Not many reviewers test at MFD, I would really like to see samples there.

Here is a sample at very near MFD. Full DX frame here. Focused on the Philips head screw hole.
I'm very impressed with this lens after shooting for a couple of days. What is most surprising to me is how the VR snaps in to steady the scene. If I didn't know better I'd say the viewfinder steadies so nicely you'd think the camera was on a large tripod and sandbagged down! It is going to make hand holding a pleasure.
Only drawback is weight - at age 64 I won't be able to hand hold in the field for the lengthy periods I did as a younger pup.

I've noticed this as well, VR on this lens steadies the viewfinder better than any other lens I have ever used of any focal length, even at 500mm hand held for long periods of time.

Have you used the Canon 100-400L II or the Sigma 150-600/6.3 C ?
That's not meant to suggest brand war of superiority ... just asking if you have a reference point that I'm already familiar with.

I have used the Nikon 200-400mm f4G VR1, Sigma 150-600mm Sports, Canon 70-200mm 2.8L IS II w/ and w/o TCs. Haven't used the 100-400mm II Canon or the Sigma C yet.
Edit: I should add that I am actually comparing the VR on the 200-500 with my 200-400+1.4 TC on a monopod. Which makes it pretty darn impressive

I currently use the Canon 100-400 II and my 200-500 should be arriving Monday. The 4-stop IS on the 100-400 is incredible, so I imagine I'll feel the same about the 4.5 stop VR of the Nikon. I'll report back when I get a chance to use it handheld a few times.

I'm very curious how it performs wide open at a distance. This is where the 80-400G falls apart. Shorter distances the thing was absolutely fantastic
Have a look at the Cameralabs link Matt, from what I understand those are all 100% crops of distance shots (quite distant though, infinity focus).

That would be great to hear your thoughts between the two. A shootout would be even more so.
