I had a 400 VR that squeaked after sitting unused. I left the lens cover (bag) on and allowed the AF to cycle back and forth. After about 30 seconds, the squeak became less noticeable and after a minute or so it was completely gone never to return. Maybe give it a try, it might just need some "encouragement".

My missus has got me one of these for Christmas. After reading about the small amount with QC problems I presume it's easy to spot if your unlucky to get a bad one ? Is the issue at long distance or all distances ? I've got 80-400G and a couple of 300mm primes
