Very nice -- probably the best photo I've ever seen of these ugly SOBs (I dunno why I don't like them--I guess they kinda remind me of vulture or condors...just in water all the time ).
Thanks Smitty. We have an abundance of them at a local spot. It's rare that I get any clicks worth posting of them. Not much activity when I've been able to get out and shoot lately. I was lucky that they posted so nicely on the perch when the light was decent.

A few from today. Atmospherics played a bit of havoc with all my shots this morning but still had some with acceptable (although not great) sharpness...

Thank you!
You all can call me crazy, but I am considering seriously to sell my trusty 300/2.8G AF-S VR1 (although she is starting to show those horrendous and frightening squeaking sounds!), and buying a second copy (back up !) of the 200-500/5.6E ( or the new 300FL/4 ?!).
As I almost always (99%) use the 300/2.8 with a TC17E or mostly TC20EIII, thus, bokeh considerations are minor for me.

I also use the 300mm f2.8 VR1 with the TC-17e a lot . For best sharpness I have to stop down to f7.1 (maybe my tc-17e is a bad copy ) so also considering buying a 200-500 to be mainly used at 500mm . How do you find the 200-500 wide open compares against the 300 + TC-17e ?

I would opt for the 300/4.0 PF.
It weighs next to nothing, is small and the IQ is very good. It takes a 1.4TC very well (2.0TC not so good).

Thanks Chris for the tip. I have the old 300/4 AF-S and with the TC17E I have had excellent results.
Supposedly the new 300/4 with this TC + VR will deliver even better results!?

I have no test side by side, but my general impression is that the 200-500 even at 500 & wide open delivers better IQ than the 300+TC17E wide open.

Thank you . I have the 300mm PF too , both this and the 300mm f2.8 work great with the TC-14e iii . The 300mm PF is a great little lens for close distance, it's very sharp
