My missus has got me one of these for Christmas. After reading about the small amount with QC problems I presume it's easy to spot if your unlucky to get a bad one ? Is the issue at long distance or all distances ? I've got 80-400G and a couple of 300mm primes
There are three things that I know of to look out for:
1. Does autofocus work while zooming the lens? Early models sometimes locked up when doing this and needed a firmware update. I think you can find the affected range online and no need to test for this if you're not in the range of serial numbers.
2. There were some reports of the rubber gasket at the mount coming off. Look it over to make sure it's not peeling off, if it looks fine you're probably good.
3. Image quality is always prone to variation due to the nature of complex designs like this. Nikon lenses are typically less sharp at longer distances, and in my experience the 200-500 follows this trend, but very minimally. Expect that images of distant subjects will be a bit less sharp, but the majority of that will come from heat distortion and focus imperfections rather than the lens design (I'm honestly not 100% sure that it even is worse at longer distances, it's so hard to test reliably without external factors interfering). The 200-500 should be sharper than the 80-400 for distant subjects (at 400mm f5.6), unless you have a really stellar 80-400. Ultimately, don't worry about it too much. If it's getting shots you like and there's nothing obviously wrong it's almost certainly fine.
It seems that very few people have any issues - this lens is incredibly popular, so any reports of problems are a tiny minority and likely very unrepresentative of the average lens.

Thank you for that much appreciated, Ive just checked the serial number and according to Nikons site mines not affected. The gasket looks to be snug
The weather here is currently rain and heavy dark clouds so it's not ideal for testing. My 80-400G is pretty sharp , not as sharp as the 300mm primes with or without TC-14e iii . It's mainly for longer distance I'll be using the 200-500 so hoping the IQ is ok . It was a choice between the 200-500 or 150-600 Sigma sport , I mainly went with the Nikon for the f5.6 wide open

Mr Multi...
here's a crop from 108 yds when the frozen fog cleared.
You'll absolutely love the IQ this lil zoom delivers.

Eastern Wild Turkey. A group of 10, all from the same nest. They hatched in May or June; i.e. as soon as there was enough ground cover, that the mother felt the nest would be concealed. All 10 siblings, appeared at my house about 2 weeks ago. I decided I want to help them get through the winter, hence the ground seed.
Wish them luck.
Conditions: light snow and freezing rain. I used one of the Optech Rainsleeves.
Technique: Sat on ground with waterproof pants, Nikon right angle finder for low angle, D850, Auto ISO, Manual exposure, increase exposure 1.0 stops.
Most of the shoot was deleted. This one looked quite sharp, so I decided to post.
