I also use the 300mm f2.8 VR1 with the TC-17e a lot . For best sharpness I have to step down to f7.1 (maybe my tc-17e is a bad copy ) so also considering buying a 200-500 to be mainly used at 500mm . How do you find the 200-500 wide open compares against the 300 + TC-17e ?
