This is good news as my A7RII shipped today from B&H and will arrive while I'm away - hopefully the house-sitter will be there when UPS shows up for a signature.

The 40/1.4 Voigt will also be bought tomorrow. I picked up the VM close focus adapter yesterday for a great price. I would imagine the 15/4.5-III is also going to come soon.

The choice is in the A7R as well. Default is Standard i believe as i had to change my setting to High.

I guess I set it to High over a year ago (as that's what it's set at) and completely forgot there was even an option!

, I checked my A7S a few hours ago, and it was on High. I must have forgotten about it after that. Initial reports must come from first time Canikon users.

I did go out but did not last very long out there it was 111 degrees. But I did post a few shots . Here is a link

i really need to get setup over here too as I want to do a review at some point and like to post on both forums even though folks go back and forth. I just like getting the data out there and raws so folks can make smart decisions.

Start at post 96

Also I did not run into any EVF issues out there and I shot the VC 15, 35 Zeiss Sony and the Batis 85. My Batis 25 comes tomorrow but I'm planning on heading north for cooler temps this weekend.

There's an older post on DPR that has some interesting info. Looks like that default setting for the A7r is High. It also states that AF may take longer when on High:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sony Article ID: 44408 | Last Updated: 11/27/2013

The live view image is displayed with better resolution when Display Quality is set to High than when it is set to Standard.

NOTE:

Battery consumption is higher when Display Quality is set to High. The time required to auto focus may also be longer.
The default setting for Display Quality differs depending on the camera.
ILCE-7: Standard
ILCE-7R: High

I've had three different A7R's over the last 18 months. I noticed differences in the EVF's IQ, so there must be a good amount of variation. I liked the first one, but the second always seemed dimmer/less detailed. The third seems to be the sharpest of the bunch. AFAIK, I never set the Display Quality, so they must have been on High. The second and third were new out of the box. Just checked the one I have and it is on High.

Interesting info that the default for the A7r is "High" for EVF quality.

I remember I was the first to report the D800 liveview issue. I got hammered for saying it was not good for critical focusing in low light.

Rightfully so, it was totally possible to focus the D800 accurately in live view.

Granted, live view on the D800 was indeed not sexy at all, the D810 is clearly a lot more pleasant to use, but the ability to focus accurately is the same with the 2 bodies and this is following first hand experience through tens of thousands of frames with both.

it remains to be seen whether the issue with the a7rII is about sexiness, or whether it is about ability to focus accurately MF lenses.

Cheers,
Bernard

No wonder my battery life was abysmal . . . I had absolutely no issues with the IQ of the EVF for manual focusing other than for anything remotely long-ish in focal length the image was jumping around. Hence the sale of the A7R months ago and the A7RII on the way.

No, the D800 Live View was beyond dreadful in low light focusing. Worst LV I have ever had the displeasure of using. That crappy thing deserved to get slammed. Amazing camera, apart from the LV.

I had the D800 and got out of it pretty quickly as soon as the A7r came out , I jumped ship. I was not a fan of its LV

Ironically, LV was beautifully implemented on the D3X (three years before the D800). I use that feature for manual-focus lenses up to 280mm with ease equal to the A7ii. The A7ii, BTW, has a quality view at 5.9x and 11.7x magnifications for any setting of "Display Quality".

The A7rII turns out to be 5x and 12.5 x

Interesting. I shot in the dark last night just hanging out on the couch and really low light with the Zeiss /Sony 35 1.4 lens and EVF was very nice to focus with.

Interesting that all attention has been focused on the EVF. I've used my A7/A7r/A7II bodies almost exclusively at waist level (either handheld or on a tripod), using the LCD monitor to focus. I have an A7rII on pre-order and expect to be notified that it's ready for pickup withiin the next couple of days. But MF (particularly with the Loxia 35mm) that's inferior to that of the A7r would be a deal-breaker for me so any observations in that regard would be much appreciated.

LCD is fine just like the A7II. I use both EVF and LCD . When I'm testing lenses I use a hoodman loupe to double check myself but I always seem to nail it without it anyway.

To be honest I'm finding no fault with this camera so far. I have not delved to far into AF 3rd party lens stuff too much but I know my Sigma 24-70 is not cutting the cheese as they say. Going to sell it. With the LaE 4 it works great but not the LAe3.
