Is the 5x zoom bad only with legacy glass or equally bad with native? I would find it super odd if they were different. Also curious how it is with Loxia.
With native glass at least for me the 5x seems the same ability as the 12x. This is with both Batis lenses. My only manual lens is the VC 15mm which in itself is a tough lens to focus. 12x seems better but with such DOF just a really hard lens to test with.

Do you have the AF set to PDAF only? It sounds to me like that is CDAF instead of PDAF. Changing that setting may help, but perhaps the adapter is compatible with it.
I tested it a lot more later, and perhaps it's the cheap adapter, but it's very finicky. If it 'works', it actually focuses the 50/1.4 very well. VERY well. As fast as it focuses, or perhaps even faster, than on my 1Ds Mark II. I was very impressed. Switch the camera off, and then on, and it may switch into 'not working' mode, where it hunts like mad all over the place. Switching the camera off, then on again until it gets into 'working' mode, and then its fine until the camera is shut off again. I'm sure it's something odd with the adapter, but when it's working fine, it works WELL.
Doesn't help. It also needs light. Outdoors, OK. Indoors, far faster to manually focus. Still, impressive when it works. I wasn't going to spend $400 on the metabones considering this is my only EF lens, and I'll be selling it soon (I have the FE 55/1.8...I really don't need to mess around with this.).

No you don't. My goal is to go all Native and that 55mm is killer. My only area to work on is 135 or 200. If something does not come up than I may just buy the zoom 70-200.
I was hoping the 135 and 200 canon would work but that looks to be a fail. Im really after all the AF points

Back to the EVF quality. I had a chance to use it a bit yesterday and I have no problems with the EVF quality for manual focusing. So far so good.

I already got used to it, but the A7R first magnification does look better.
Screw drive lenses won't work with the la-ea3. They require the la-ea4 kleox64 wrote:
Basically I want to know the behavior on the LAEA3 with screw drive lenses.

Still up In the air. It would be nice if someone could test Loxia 50, 55 FE and something manual 50 and share their results.
I'd go to the Sony store and check myself but apparently they don't exist in my state anymore.
Hi Dave,
I have the FE 55, Loxia 50, 50 Nocti f/1.0 and 50 Cron IV. I find that the EVF with MF is an improvement over the A7r and A7s IMO. Maybe with the increased view finder magnification and better control of the brightness for different f stop setting, and it just works even at x5. For finer detail of course the x12 is great. I was very comfortable with RF of the M240 so the A7rII works great for me

Yes, disappointing. The 2.8/200L is one of my favorite lenses, IS would make it even better but Canon doesn't offer this and it would probably increase size/weight. The Sony IS could be a very nice addition, but without good AF it isn't worth it.

I've always skipped the 5x magnification so I've not paid too much attention to its IQ.

I have found that having focus striping turned on seemed to really degrade the sharpness of the image, even in areas that there were no zebra stripes. I immediately turned that off and the magnified image was just fine.

The Sony ZA135 with an LEA4 is a stunning combination on the A7 series. Image quality is astounding. I prefer the ZA135 to the 135L any day.
Is there a setting to allow you to go to 12.5X direct without having to press again past 5X? This is disappointing, I use low contrast old lenses and could do without the added complication.

It's a quick double tap of whatever button you want to assign focus magnification to - I too want to go straight to 12.5x and don't find it that troubling since it's fast to get to 12.5x.
It's a pain in the neck. 3 button presses. Just as much a pain with my A7r. Shouldn't be necessary but then Sony do menus by committee rather than asking someone who actually uses the camera.
