I just realized that is probably just a single image which I would agree is pretty impressive. One thing I have been reading over and over is no banding issues from the 5Ds/R when pushed. That has to be a nice relief for the veteran Canon users / upgraders.

Lots of latitude for adjustment in the 5D SR files too...

I don't know...can't make out any detail on the surface of the sun....DR is looking pretty lacking to me.

Kidding, of course: that is an impressive result. Nice work.

Unfortunately, there is some faint pattern noise (horizontal and vertical banding) in deep shadows, but you have to push the exposure 5 stops to see it. The good news is that the banding isn't as bad as it was on the A7R.

With the 5D SR the extra latitude is in the highlights - in the image above the sun is not blown out; I could recover all the highlights with room to spare on the rigt side of the histogram just by using an ND mask and adjusting the sliders in LR.

Just going over some shots. Here is a screen capture.... no real edits other than sharpening and an minor exposure adjustment.

The 5Ds and Zeiss 135 T* combo is so sharp! Really enjoying this setup. The wife is going to give me a beating for not retouching the shot but.. look at all the details (good and bad) that are captured in the image.

@Molson.... WOW! Talk about a before and after! I dig it and it tells me I'm not pushing my images nearly enough in LR.

Nice work.

Zeiss 135 APO for the win! Love that lens! That's awesome Hatch.

In other news... there might be a 135 APO on the buy / sell at a very nice price to pair with someone's shiny new 5Ds/r... just say'n.

Sounds like it's slightly more zoomed in than 1 sensor pixel = 1 display pixel?

It is quite a bit more, yes. The problem with poor LV implementations like in the Nikon D800, was not in the magnification or display resolution, but in the sensor readout. The image displayed at high zoom ratio was coarse, soft and nearly useless because of the line skipping.

Very nice landscape Molson. A little "over-cooked" for my taste but a wonderful composition and scene. Also, I'm old so take it with a grain of salt...

Edited to Add:
I love shooting bracketed / HDR and push files quiet hard. Finding that balance is hard for me - too much / not enough.

Here's the same image with saturation set to 0 and using the "camera standard" LR camera profile instead of "camera landscape". I guess I should crop out those people on the left edge of the frame - at 50 MP, they are probably recognizable...

Hi all, I'm going to purchase one of these, either the 5Ds or the 5Dsr. My question is about the moire. How much of a problem is this in the 5dsr? I've read where one user had a hard time creating it. I shoot anything from fashion to nature and yes birds. Will it be a big problem with feathers or just occasional?? After dropping nearly $4K, I would like the most detail available for my needs. I've done a lot of research and looked at every image I can find from both of these cameras but can't find any moire in feathers yet in the 5Dsr. I'm ready to pull the trigger on one of these. Any thoughts? Thanks,

I think this video has your answer. Michael Tapes shows moire in one of his bird shots.

If you look at the studio setup example at DP Review there is more moiré in the feathers. I opted for the 5DS because I will be shooting birds and landscapes with it. I have 30 days to exchange it for the R version if I see a big resolution difference when people start posting comparative examples.

Thanks hatch1921, I had not seen that review. Moire seems rare even in feathers and to be well handled by LR. Just my take based on his review. You on the other hand are getting great results with the 5ds so is that extra 10% or so of resolution really an issue given the limitations of all but the very best lenses.

Poster double-posted this question in a new thread, and I replied there.

Welcome I think the link was posted yesterday... just ran across it.

The extra resolution... I think the camera is as you mentioned maxing out my lenses. They all look great on the camera.... it's like having a new set of lenses. Not joking... lots of "WOW" moments so far.

I opted for the 5Ds ... I did have the "R" on order and got cold feet with the chance of moire. I've owned several bodies over the years and have been very pleased with them. I figured the 5Ds would be a winner... and having the AA wouldn't be any different than what I've owned and been happy with in the past. I'd still like to shoot the "R" to see if I'm missing out on anything. But.. from the results I'm getting now... I'm overjoyed.

Hatch, if you're happy with the 5DS, maybe you shouldn't try the "R"-rated version...

According to Lloyd Chambers "The differences are subtle but visible: I strongly recommend the 5DS R model for most users".
