No idea when my order will be filled, but I am anxiously awaiting. I am very interested in how people deal with the port processing. Especially sharpening. From the raws I have downloaded and played with, I am cutting the amount of sharpening to about 1/2 of what I used on 5d3.
I am also thinking that 50% crops are more appropriate than 100%.
Based on rough calculations I did I'm guessing a sharpening radius of about 0.5 - 0.6 (Lightroom) is going to be optional. That will compensate for the smaller pixel size. That's going to be the biggest difference from using the 5D2 or 1Dx I think.
But I'm just blowing smoke because I don't even back the camera yet Will have to wait and test that out.

My 5DS arrived today and did a quick test under cloudy, showery skies in the backyard this afternoon.
Canon 5DS, Canon 500mm F4 II and 1.4x III, Live View, cable release, tripod and Wimberley II head, 600 EX-RT flash on bracket above camera, 1/200, F11, ISO 800
Full frame shot, and followed by a crop of the same shot.
Raw converted using Capture One, Topaz Denoise (light setting), NIK Sharpener
Looking forward to more shooting tomorrow as the weather starts to clear up for the rest of the week.

Nice!
This is what I'm hoping for - cropping ability for wildlife. I'd like the wider field of view for tracking and then crop out an image of similar quality to what I get with a 1Dx.
I'm very impressed by the clean files up to and including ISO 6400. With the 5D2, I almost never shot above ISO 1250. Now I don't think I'll hesitate to use any of the range 100 to 6400 on the 5DS.
ISO 6400, 400 mm (100-400 orig), 1/6400 sec, f/9, one tenth original size
I think I made the right choice in buying the 5DS. What detail!!

I've been having fun with mine since I got it. I haven't been doing any controlled tests but just using it. My black dog in a dark forest is a fair low light test though. Taken at ISO 3200.

Canon 5DS with Zeiss Makro-Planar 50/2
1/6 second, f/3.5, ISO 100 on Tripod, Live View, Remote Shutter
Depth of field takes some care - the larger shot looks more in focus than crop.

Alan, how responsive does the camera feel? Do you have to wait some time to view the photos on the back lcd and zoom in to check focus?
I have had my previous Canon DSLR set up to show the photo at 100% at the active focus point, so I'm very interested in hearing whether the 5DS is a bit sluggish with the view or not. Those are some big raw files to handle after all.
I'll have to try that 100 % instant focus review, assuming it is available. I didn't know it was an option on some cameras. I set mine to show the RGB histogram since that is my main concern. But now I'm learning about all the new Autofocus features (coming from a 5D2) and there is a lot to learn!
The camera does feel / seem responsive, but I would not be the best judge because I don't have a 5D3 or 1D-X experience to compare with.
I like the sound of the shutter. Much gentler than 5D2. It sounds almost like a rangefinder camera.

Cool!
Regarding the 100 % instant focus review, check page 331 of the manual. Here you can set what happens, when you press the magnification button. I can't live without this feature.
Alan, Karl, KKfung, Atodzia, Brolly99 thanks for posting images and your findings thus far.
Alan I see you are using Lightroom and Karl is using Capture One, Atodzia is using Capture One with Topaz Denoise and NIK Sharper. KKFung and Brolly99 what are you using?
It is good to see some variety in PP packages.
Alan that is good news if you are willing to go upto ISO 6400 from 1250. Sounds rangefinder like you say. I look forward to hearing that sound to see how close it comes to my rangefinder.
Karl I find from time to time the same thing with a Capture One, Photoshop combination where the cropped image looks less in focus but often I find that it is the setting I use with my Retina display that causes it as I am always at 2880 resolution and it appears to stretch the image to display it by doubling pixels. Not always but it depends on the shot.
Nice shadow recovery KKFung.
Keep the shots coming folks. I am excited with what you have posted.

DoF is behaving as you would expect - changing with "print" size (or viewing distance). As people use these extra MP to make bigger prints that they used to, they will need to re-assess how to manage the DoF (the old calculators won't work )

Thanks for the posts, Karl, and welcome to FM !
That's a dramatic push, KKFung. Good to know that the tones hold up. Tremendous resolution with top lenses.
I think the advance reports that the cameras have very good colour are true.
Thanks Monito! Yes, what worry me is the color of such a high density pixel camera (I had bad experience from another brand of camera before) however after I tried some test shots and PP in Lightroom, "color inside the raw" is very good and I'm happy with it since I can have a good color ability with very high resolution camera (before it launch the digit back may be the only choice)
