I read somewhere that Live View supports a 16x zoom - is that right? Or is still 10x like the 5D III Live View?

I notice that as well. Did the 5d mark ii or original 5d behave in such a manner?

Could be worse... the Nikon D800/D800E would lock up the camera for 8-10 seconds after a Live View shot. I find the 5D SR takes about a second or two at most, and that's only at the end of a multi-shot bracket.

Is it just a function of sensor area pixels -> LCD pixel ratio, which naturally increases the relative magnification for the 5DS's higher pixel density? This is how the Sony A7 series works (A7r is 14.4x, A7 is 11.7x, and A7s is 8.3x).

(Some might prefer the following version... 100% crop of the ridgeline.)

Seems to be working out OK... ;-)

Glad to see you got the 5Ds/R Dan. I know you'll make it sing! I really like the terrific photograph you and everyone are posting. The detail and colors are extremely nice.

I decided to hold off on my 5Ds/R purchase, canceling my pre-order a week before shipping. I've decided to dip my toes in the medium format pool for my landscape / portrait work and use a 5DMIII for chasing the kids, etc. I don't think I'll ever part with the awesome Canon / Zeiss lenses. I struggled for two months with the decision to get the "R" or not. As of next week I'm hopeful a "z" will be in the bag.

I continue to monitor this thread for the terrific photos everyone's posting. Thanks.

Can you recover the whole file? I shot one at 16x9 and was not able to see how to recover the cropped out portion in ACR. In this case I also shot a full version for insurance, but it would be good to know how.

In ACR select the crop tool and use the option to eliminate the crop — the whole thing is there.

interesting, one of the things I like least about my G1X is its 4:3 aspect ratio. Since my monitor is 16:9 I'm tending to crop to this aspect for many of my landscape scenes. Is 4:3 a typical print ratio? It does fit my iPad correctly.

There is no truly "typical" print ratio. 4:3 is the format from many MF film cameras — that is the "645" format, which is still used on many digital MF cameras.

That is correct.

I considered a 645z also. I would say that I came down at perhaps 3:2 in favor of the 5Ds cameras for my work in the end, though for some of it the 645z could have been a slightly better choice. The reasons I chose the 5Ds R option instead included:

- A number of friends/colleagues who regularly use MF digital to produce very large prints have been using (mostly) the Sony D800, D800e, and D810 to produce excellent prints at 30" x 40" sizes — so good that you would be very, very hard pressed to tell the difference. (I didn't realize this until a group of folks I meet with regularly — a group that includes MF digital shooters — did a blind test of prints at that size.)

- My kind of photography often requires rather long focal lengths, and that is a problem with larger formats.

- Compounding that issue, a fair amount of my work is done while traveling on foot or even while backpacking, and the larger, heavier MF gear is a problem there, too.

Sounds like it's slightly more zoomed in than 1 sensor pixel = 1 display pixel?

I had the 645D and really enjoyed it. The only "issue" is that the wide angle lens selection is limited, or was, now Pentax has the awesome 28-45mm zoom. It is easy to filter (82mm) and it is just about the perfect range for landscapes.

Even so there is no tilt/shift lens alternative with the Pentax.

Lens selection is where Canon is awesome and a Sony A7RII just about rules supreme since one can basically use just about any lens ever made for 35mm (or larger) on the Sony.

But the 645Z sensor is just stunning.

So in short, the 645Z is an amazing sensor/body still looking for more lenses and the Canon, as it has been for many years now, is an awesome body looking for a sensor, this new 50mp sensor seems nic, but still falls way short in the DR department. The Sony has it all (since other manufacturer's lenses can be used) but it needs a better RAW file (14 bit and lossless). Let's not forget about the D810.

Good info Sneaky. Agree about the Tilt / Shift and Pentax lens lineup. I have three primes for now - 35, 55, 150 and eventually will trade up to the 28-45. Truly excited about the camera and pushing the 645z files. Fortunately, I have the 5DMIII and 17 TS/E for those times I need it.

I still have the Pentax 645 35mm A lens. Amazing that such a compact lens covers full frame 645. The 28-45mm is a beast of a lens though. Quite large and heavy but worth it imho.

From what I have seen the 645Z files are just amazing and can be adjusted a LOT.

The only way to get that sensor and better glass together is MUCH more expensive via a PhaseOne IQ150/250/350 back (and their DF or the new XF platform or with any number of tech camera solutions) or a Hasselblad H5D-50c.

The Sony A7RII can be mounted on a Cambo Actus or Arca Swiss Universalis body and then large format lenses can be used with lots of tilt and shift available.

So in fact the Sony A7RII can be used like a digital back of sorts. A "poor man's" Digital Back sorta speak.

Even more off topic, Canon's TSE24mm and 17mm lenses cover a medium format sensor no problem...

Lots of latitude for adjustment in the 5D SR files too...

Very nice landscape Molson. A little "over-cooked" for my taste but a wonderful composition and scene. Also, I'm old so take it with a grain of salt...

Edited to Add:
I love shooting bracketed / HDR and push files quiet hard. Finding that balance is hard for me - too much / not enough.

Is the source one image, or an HDR bracket? If the former, over-cooked or not, pretty impressive.

Single image, with some quick adjustments in Lightroom.

I added a touch of extra saturation, just because I could...
