You've really done a nice job showcasing one of the major perks of a 300 prime/ tc combo John. The close focusing ability is great for on the move photos of flowers, plants and what I call "pseudo macro" subjects.

Thanks, Daniel.

I am going to more seriously take advantage of the in-body stacking the D850 has. Wish I would have thought about it in Thailand.

Also wish my D500 had it

Still, as you say, for florals and butterflies, the D850 + 300mm TC offers a beautiful combination, that I will be taking advantage of in 2019.

I agree about the focus stacking feature and wishing it was on the D500. That would come in really handy

JohnK, the 300PF is simply a superb lens with more and more photographers recognizing is as time moves on. However, your work with it is second to none. Thank you for sharing.

Many thanks for the kind words, Ariel.

Simply put, the 300 PF is the most flexible, pleasurable wildlife lens I've ever used.

Like all lenses, it has its limitations. Yet the few limitations are dwarfed by the size of its many applications.

Unlike any lens I can think of, the 300 PF does more (and more comfortably!) for us nature hikers than any other lens in its class.

If I could only select "one" lens to use forever, for hiking, this would be my instant choice. Cheers

I've been using 300mm PF since 2016. Ever since I got 500/5.6, I'm tempted to take 500 with me every time I go out. Anyhow I took 300mm to my work one day and during lunch I got this sequence (using D500). They are cropped and first shot is not very sharp. Rest are ok. But the heavy crop doesn't help much. I wish if I had 500 with me.

Nice
How do you get such detailed exif? Things like effective FL post crop and distance?

Interesting you asked about it. I think the distance and crop will give an idea about what can be expected with camera+lens combination. Based on what I'm finding, I can go up to 10MP crop from a sharp D500 picture. I don't need to print more than 10"X15"

Here's my log for 500mm pf
http://wildbirdimages.com/500pf/

Now how to get them?
For effective FL I have a calculation in a spread sheet. This is the formula

EFL=FL * Sensor crop * (Horizontal pixels of sensor / Horizontal pixel after crop)

So with a 300mm lens on D500 I get this value

642=300*1.5*(5568/3900) where 5568 is D500's pixels horizontally and 3900 is the horizontal pixels after crop)
So a 300mm lens will give you 640mm equivalent angle of view on D500 when cropped to 10MP (3900 * 2600)

To get the distance information I use an exe called exiftool.exe. It's command line.
eg. exiftool.exe 653_6860.nef > 653_6860.txt
This will spit out a text file with all the exif info including "Focus Distance". I don't think it's 100% accurate. But it's very close. In above burst all pictures are showing same distance. I'm pretty sure the last picture is closer than 23m. So it may not be recording in a continuous burst.

Hope this helps

A few "technical" images to show what the 300/4 PF can do with the Canon 500D close-up lens.

The pencil picture below should give you an idea of the magnification.

By using the following pictures of a millimeter rule, you can calculate the magnification values, which are in the 0.6-0.8 X range. I give focusing and working distances too, for your convenience.
