I love my canon gear. I see a lot of people switching in the B&S forum. I've got very little loyalty to any brand. I spent a lot of time with Nikon gear and there were some disadvantages and some advantages.
Nikon complaints
The menus just suck IMO. For me the green tint bugged the crap out of me. The focus breathing 70-200(really more like 70-135)VR2 bugged me. The huge files. The moire and aliasing(mostly video) Bugged the crap out of me. The lens selection.... Lots of gaps. Seems almost everything is made in China now.
But I loved
The obvious DR. I could do so much more in post.
The cleaner files. Less noise, more desirable noise.
Built in AF assist.
Built in flash(to trigger OCF in a pinch).
No approval. You should see how much Canon gear I'm keeping. I've shot both systems in addition to panasonic and sony for years. I own a lot of gear and want more I have several setups including my toe dipping into Fuji now.
But all I hear from Canon users is the desire for better DR. I too like better DR, but there has to be other reasons of camera envy than just DR.
Hoping this thread doesn't become filled with negativity, as I like the premise of this discussion.
When I first started with photography, I had a Nikon F70 (something70, can't remember) with a wide-angle lens & I quickly fell in love with the hobby. When I was offered the opportunity to start shooting paid events, I realized quickly I had to get a digital camera & after doing a lot of research, I chose Canon for the wider selection of lenses - it seemed like many of the consumer-aimed lenses had very good performance for cost, and I don't regret the decision at all.
Fast forward nearly 10 years.. I still think Canon has the distinct upper hand in terms of lens selection, though I'm sure I could also make-do with strictly Nikon equipment if I had to. (I also love the premise of that not-deathly-sharp but distinctly awesome 58mm prime they have. Being a photo nerd, I rather like playing with colleagues' Nikon equipment from time to time when I/we have time to kill during things like sporting events.)
Looking forward to hearing some more in-depth perspectives from people more familiar with Nikon equipment!
Considering that this is the Canon forum and you're seeking input from people who have extensive use of the Nikon system, wouldn't this be better posted in the Nikon forum?
You want more but you are selling your gear ?. Why not just add a bunch of Nikon gear ?. They're cheap!.
BTW: how many Canon gear do you have actually ? 15 L lenses ? No ?.

You continue to provide valuable insight. Thank you. I own 8 L lenses not for sale and 2 5DMK3's not for sale in addition to canon flashes triggers and canon accessories.
You may as well ask what people like/dislike about asian cuisine -- its all down to personal preference. I switched once and I'm perfectly content, but I didn't have the same experience as you. I never ran into any of the issues you mentioned, and I also didn't have any of the oil splatter issues either (D600). Once I figured out how everything worked (I read the manual, true story), I haven't had any complaints. I love the files, ergonomically I like the way its set up, the auto iso and the U1 & U2 settings mean I almost never use the menus. The resolution hits the right spot between not enough and too much. Nikon also has a good selection of lenses -- clearly not up to Canon, but I'm not a professional and I don't shoot sports or video. I was ready to upgrade from the 5D and for me the 5D II did not address what I didn't like about the 5D and the 5D III was way out of my price range. So for me it was an easy decision to switch.

Nope. Because fanbois will be fanbois. I want honest opinions. Asking Canon users what they like about Canon would be the same results.

I get that, but weigh that against the likelihood of getting uninformed opinions because you're asking Canon users about Nikon, or biased opinions because again, you're in the Canon forum asking about Nikon.

No doubt there will be pushback, as already evidenced. However that noise doesn't phase me. I can weed through it and find nice insightful posts. Why am I interested you may ask? Because quite honestly I love anything camera related and can't quite understand the hyperloyalty. I know I am not alone therefore I am interested in what others have experienced. There is nothing serious or going to result from this thread other than some fun.

It will be a challenge
Thanks for the post. I agree. I could never stop shooting Canon just because the lenses are just so much better. And the improvements keep appearing like the new IS primes. I love love love my 35 F2 IS dearly.

I probably would ask a similar question in a food forum
Nikon lenses screw on backwards.
Until this year, Nikon did not have a decent 100-400 equivalent. Now they do and it is over-priced.
Nikon does not have an equivalent to the 400mm f5.6.

I liked Nikon film cameras more than Canon because they were more traditional: mechanical metal models continued into the new millennium. The FM3A and 45 2.8 pancake was my pride and choice for years. Didn't care much for their digital offerings as everything was ass-backwards with awkwardly conceived physical controls and menus, hence fleeing to Canonland years ago. But, I suppose, anybody can get used to an awkward interface with enough practice and even start to like it, but I wasn't willing to invest that much time when EOS was easy to run out of the box and without cracking the manual.
I like that Nikon is making enough Canon folks nervous, or consider switching, that it could potentially trigger Canon to respond. When I see wedding togs dumping their D4s to go to the 750s, it says a lot to me.
I have a friend who shot me over one of his 5D3 files, and wanted me to see how far I could push the shadows before it got goofy. I got 3.05 stops, which was good, but not enough for the scene. In my mind, the scene didn't need screwed with, but he was on the fence about switching. He shot the file to me, because he knows I shoot 5d3 cameras.
He likes the idea of going to a beach, exposing for the sky, and getting usable photos.
I like that Nikon is offering features that make some Canon users nervous.
I like that Nikon has an absolutely killer UWA zoom. The Canon camp doesn't have that. The 16-35 f2.8II is good...as an event photographer lens in the center. The edges are better than the 17-40, and 16-35i, as well as the 17-35i, but still, they don't hold up well. The Nikon UWA is wider, better looking, and has IQ that is on par if not BETTER than Canon's 14 f/2.8 PRIME.
I would actually consider buying a Nikon d750, and a 14-24 just to never take apart.
Likes
- one of my 'life' long friends is a Nikon shooter, his 18-200 zoom is absolutely killer, Canon's 'SUCKS'
- being able to try Nikon gear is a huge bonus and continues to remind me why I shoot Canon
- it's cool Nikon saw the potential in Sony's EXMOR sensor tech and implemented it, that kind of decision is bold; not clinging to home-grown must have been difficult.
- DSLR pricing as of late seems more reasonable given economic times
- their flash system has always been top-notch and envied, until Canon caught up; I'll never part with my MT-24EX and 580EXII setup; tho the 600RT looks interesting
Dislikes
- their body ergonomics SLR/DSLR and menus for DSLRs absolutely 'SUCK' and they have since 1978
- the shutter button positioning is silly and awkward
- there's no QCD and this is a monumental flaw/omission
- other than a few stellar lenses the bulk of their glass is quite uninteresting price/performance wise
- they've 'never' and continue to not have a wired remote switch that I can use, they are too fat and the actual button is in the wrong place...
- the left turn glass plays with my mind and that frustrates my crippled state
This is personal opinion/experience, nothing more, nothing less, both systems serve their masters well

I shot canon for 7+ years and now shoot Nikon. Lots of PRO's and CONS with both systems some little some big.
Competition is good for us
I won't really bad mouth either one, their both GREAT systems and can do GREAT things.
These are just my personal things I have noticed that I can remember.
thoughts:
DR (big one for a lot of people)
AF assist lamp (cool sometimes, you can always turn it off, but its their, I normally leave it off)
Standard plastic screen protection, its a great feature and comes with the camera
built in commander flash on FF bodies (huge one for me personally save me several hundred dollars and I an still trigger flash
Dual SD slots on entry level FF (big one for me to have RAID), I don't like the mixed cards of the 5dmIII or D800x
I personally like the 50mm AFS and 85 AFS better than the cannon counter parts, great value for the money. I believe they have full time manual focus and the canons do not (if I remember correctly)
I do like the 70-200 IS II 2.8 better than about anything else (tamron is not bad though)
Canon does have the 1.2 PRIMES which are awesome, but out of my range of my bag anyway
You can use older Glass AIS/AI primes.
Menus, I really still like the canon menu system better, maybe cause I grew up with it?
I have enjoyed the colors on my Nikon (don't flame me please..its not meant for that, i'm just saying for me personally and canon don't have bad colors, its a personally comment please take it as such)
Do think Canon has more comfortable bodies for the most part.
At the time I switched I felt personally like the Nikon system gave me more value for the money and I have enjoyed it.
Both take GREAT photos and comes down more to skill than any system.
