Why I like Nikon:
- Dependable cameras and lenses. 5+ years, 3 cameras(from a d90 - d800e), 15 lens spanning from kit lens to high end lens and everything has always worked out of the box, and continue to work with out magic issues cropping up.
- Excellent Image quality sensors. (Sony is probably the only competition here and Nikon still seams to edge them out most of the time)
- Fairly well rounded lens selection. Almost any FX F mount lens can work on basically any current camera. (Besides for Canon does any other camera maker even come close to such a complete lens kit for there cameras?)
- Well established ecosystem of 3rd party lenses and accessories. (Again besides for Canon does any other camera maker even come close to having as much 3rd party lenses and accessories?)
What I don't Like:
- Botched releases (D800 AF issues, D600 shutter, D810 long exposure issue(granted they did a great job it seems handling this last one)). This makes me leery to get new products at release.
- Bad customer service stories, which make me wonder what might happen if I ever need to get something fixed. Granted no company seams to be perfect when it comes to service.
- Why do there cameras seem to to be intentionally limited. (D7100 limited buffer. DF, D600 and D610 limited AF. D750 limited buffer. DF, D600, D610, D750 limited sync speed and top shutter speed. Nikon 1 cameras no bracketing. all Nikon cameras limited to 30 seconds max exposure with out external release.)
- No high end DX camera. Even a d7100 with fixed buffer could fill the whole.
- Lack of good value native lenses for advanced hobbyist. Especially on the telephoto range(Eg: 300mm f4, 400mm f4, 500mm f5.6)
- Can't find a second camera that would fit my needs well. Between the lack of a high end DX camera, and all the limits imposed on the FX / DX cameras listed above I can't find the second camera I really want to have in my kit. This has made me consider a mirrorless system for a while, but there don't seam to be a system developed enough yet for my needs.
Some of the things I don't like about Nikon is that they removed the aperture ring on their new lenses, removed the pc socket from the cameras, took away the auto mode on their flashes, started making their lenses with super plastic instead of metal. I guess all the camera makers are doing the same thing. I'm getting tired of waiting for the D 400!
Dislikes: Availability of parts to third party repair shops.
Some lenses have gone without updates for far too long (17-35,105,135,185)
D400 (I know, I know...)
Sometimes unclear product lineup.
Likes: Great Low Light Performance
Great Ergonomics (IMHO)
Variety of FF bodies.
Not afraid to try retro-vintage (though I hope the next DF is better thought out.)
Legacy Lens Compatibility
Nikon 1 is a great venture into mirror-less: can't wait for better ISO performance!
Enough product refreshes that used bodies become affordable faster.
I shoot Canon in my hobby and Nikon at work. I love the OLED viewfinders in Nikon. So much better than Canon's and I think the materials in the bodies are that bit better. I've had rubber port covers fall apart on my Canon. Never on a Nikon.
I can kinda see what the Nikon design team was thinking when they designed these bodies:
Df = Ok team, let's put our best high ISO sensor on this but also an AF module that struggles in low light. That'll teach these young hipsters to manual focus their AF-S lenses just like how we did it back in the good ol days.
D7100 = We'll make this a good action camera, but let's limit the buffer so they will still save up for the D4!
D800/D800E - let's introduce both bodies and see what the beta testers say. The next body that comes out will have the best of both bodies.
D4 - Since this is for pros, let's take out the EasyISO feature.. because anything with "Easy" on it clearly belongs to D5200! Got it.
D600 - Team, let's cripple this body so bad, but we'll offer free sensor cleaning for life to make up for it.
