Canon owes you nothing and you in turn aren't obligated to buy their products if they don't meet your requirements. When you get to the point where you think a company owes "you" something then it's time to move on. Plenty of alternatives out there to buy. Instead of being pissed off start using the gear that produces the output you want.
So you say, but many of us do feel a company needs to earn our business so yes they do owe me, you and everyone otherwise we bitch, complain and move on. I highly doubt canon loves it's users buying panasonic and sony cameras so in a sense they want me to owe them my loyalty for their production of great products. All companies want that loyalty. It's a relationship. It's how it works. That's how it works. Otherwise canon would not have a marketing division, and spend so much on R&D.

It's impossible to not laugh at Canon.
Canon is running on fumes in both development and marketing. Sales are evaporating. They still dominate in sales due to a history and brand recognition but taking canon seriously is getting harder by the day.
In just a few words, I believe we were setting ourselves up for disappointment. Canon USA came up with a marketing strategy and they advertised in the NY Times. It is not Canon, the global-wide company as a lot of us assumed that did this. As such, they set the countdown clock to the local time. We believed in what we wanted to believe. It would have been a big departure from what Canon normally does when they introduce a major camera and most of us were so gullible to believe that it would be..... a camera. Oh, well .
We all need to laugh at our selves. I have been very happy with what Canon has already done. The 1Dx, all the new glass are all spectacular even my new old 400 2.8is is the BOMB. Even if Canon had give everyone something most would still be disappointed and unhappy. Be content with what your have and what they offer or move on to another manufacturer and continue to be unhappy...
Obviously photography is more about the equipment, but when you are the equipment manufacturer ---- it's about the equipment. Facing an onslaught of competition from Sony and replacement by cell phones- this is Canon's response?
Here hoping:
-The Sony camera guys are getting accolades from their bosses and drinks at the bar tonight.
-Wall Street punishes Canon for not getting it.
Frankly, if you put Sony camera and Sigma lenses in the same company lately, you'd have Canon and Nikon faded.
Silence would have been better than this distraction- that doesn't cover-up the fact that Canon has lost its way. Sure they may sell cameras (now), but people on this forum are canaries in the coal mine when it comes to camera tech and the way things are going.
The odd wording of the advertisement makes more sense now. My theory is that the idea for this came from Japan and the American Canon guys didn't want anything to do with it so they told their bosses- we'll run what you guys came up with.
How about putting resource on the 100-400II instead of this marketing masturbation BS.
Funny how every small Canon announcement or rumor now leads to an internet hype about a new Canon high MP (better FF sensor based) camera. Clearly shows that many are waiting for such new camera whereas two years ago most here denied even to be interested in a D800-sensor based FF camera product. I am afraid those who are still waiting need to wait longer....or need to take a closer look what's available outside the Canon world. Many already did the latter.
On the other hand it is an excellent time to purchase Canon lenses - prices of many EF and L lenses have dropped quite a bit due to lower demand, and the trend will continue.

Lower demand and canon lowered prices to box in their customers preventing quick sell offs and brand changing. Cynical bunch at canon.

That's now the bill for earlier mistakes Canon did IMO regarding cameras:
1. Crippling the 5D MkII AF by implementing at the time already old AF from the 5D to avoid in house competition with the 1Ds MkIII. This led to the development of the 5D MkIII which mainly improved in AF but kept the rest of the camera mostly stagnant whereas the competition then overran Canon with new FF sensors.
2. Too late investment in new sensor process generation setups delayed until now new Canon FF sensors. Focus too much on peripheral camera improvements recognizing need from video and sports shooters. Fully ignoring (or delaying?) need for high DR performance and higer resolution.
3. Too late jump into the mirrorless market with the EOS-M models - again overrun by competition here. So far no intention of Canon visible to show up with a competitive FF mirrorless product soon either.
Funny, Canon of the 2010s reminds me of General Motors of the 1970s. Legacy products that are big and bloated and they are being overtaken by technology change.
See the impossible?
I see dead camera companies....
The EOS-M would have been fine- if they had actually made a good camera- specifically AF. I got one for my wife and she refused to use it and was very frustrated by it. It just sucks.
I have a 5DII and a 1DIII and I don't have any compelling reason to upgrade my bodies- and the one lens I wanted was the 100-400II and they decided to punt on that. Fine. Run your company this way and I'll spend my money elsewhere.

If you want to have loyalty towards a company knock yourself out. I buy Canon products because they work for me and give me the output I want. If they didn't, I wouldn't be using them.
According to many low ISO DR proponents, they have been waiting for years and years for Canon to give them what they want while the competition has moved forward on the very feature that they so desire. I'm sorry, but I just don't have that kind of patience. I avoided the whole 1D3 fiasco because my 1D2's were still producing very fine output but if Canon had not released the 1D4 when they did I was prepared to sell all and move to Nikon.
I just don't see the point of continuing to shoot with gear that is not optimized to your #1 photographic priority and given the amount of bitching by some on the forums how could it be any less then their top priority?
To me missed opportunities in getting the shot with the best gear for your type of shooting is far more important then any kind of loyalty you feel towards a company that doesn't care about you.

Totally agree. Should have been announced with the 7D2. Massive blown opportunity.
"The message goes out to fear doubt logic and reason, we don't see what you see, we see impossible"
Well for many years, what I saw was hope that Canon would once again be at the forefront of photography technology..... this marketing campaign is pretty hilarious, I'm wondering who greenlit the tagline
