yeah, my tests on the m9 and 24mp UT didn't show that strong a difference surprisingly in midzone. It was there but pretty tiny (the zm had a bit of one too). the 1/3 clicks really bugged me on the vm and blue/yellow colors always looked a little weird (i have this issue with most voigtlanders). i probably prefer the FLE overall for haptics and look, but the zm has a distinctive look that i would sometimes prefer. just looking at sharpness i think the vm is the winner though and the difference in bokeh are pretty small between it and the FLE....Show more →
It's a noticeable difference on the M10-R or A7R II UT. (I will find some crops)
All lenses look great on the 18MP M9.
I agree on rendering though, they are not that different except that the Leica FLE has bit more outlining at f/1.4 and lower optical vignetting.

Did you buy the chrome or black? I really wanted the chrome (brass) but it's so much heavier.
Black because I prefer the lens to be a little more discrete than shiny chrome. I have the silver 50 Lux ASPH and it sure feels like a solid hunk of metal and glass. A photographer friend always gets a kick out of holding it because the unexpected weight relative to its size. One such lens is enough for my walk-around kit.

I still own this lens and although do not use it much after buying the FLE and pre-asph, I don't have the courage to sell it. IMO, it's one of the best 35mm lenses for the M-mount.

I think it is indeed one of the finest 35mm lens in M system and I still keep it as you do.
It is indeed excellent lens with impressive sharpness for all around purpose.

I have to say that even with the recent 35mm M-mount releases, the Voigtlander 35mm f/1.7 Ultron is still my top choice for the Leica M body and it's too bad it was discontinued. If you can find one new or used, I highly recommend it. It's compact, well-built, superb optically and has great rendering.
On the Leica M or Sony Kolari UT, it's capable of high resolution and contrast from f/1.7 across the entire image field. It's just as good, if not better, than our best 35mm M lenses like the Zeiss 35/1.4 ZM and Voigtlander 35/2 APO. It's also flat field, except when using it on a stock Sony or any other mirrorless other than the SL system which does much better but still not optimal for this lens.
The newer Voigtlander 35/2 APO only beats it at the extreme corner at wide apertures. Starting at f/4, I would not hesitate using the Ultron for serious landscapes. Regarding CA, there may be fringing in high contrast transitions but it's nothing to worry about and averagel for a non-APO lens.
Focus transition zone is smooth making rendering pleasant. I don't take this for granted for 35mm lenses and it's a strength compared to lenses like the Voigtlander 35/2 APO, Voigtlander 35/2 Ultron, Leica 35/1.4 FLE and even Zeiss 35/1.4 ZM.
Flare resistance is the best I've seen in a 35mm lens and if you like defined sunstars, there is nothing better out there. There is prominent optical vignetting which unfortunately translates to DOF deepening towards the edges as well as cat-eye shape specular highlights but very few lenses do any better. If that bothers you, the Leica 35/1.4 FLE does better in this regard.
The Voigtlander 35/1.7 Ultron combines many strengths in one lens offering superb image quality, pleasant rendering and compactness at a fair price....Show more →
Hi,Fred,
whenyou say"...other than the SL system which does much better but still not optimal for this lens.",what performance does the lens on SL fail you? sharpness across-frame? corner IQ? field curvature? is it very visible?
I am thinking of buying this lens for my SL2-s and thinking about the image quality that I may get on my camera.

With Cosina, you never know. Lenses seem to make comebacks, though sometimes it takes a while. Lots of v2 and v3 models in the current lineup.
I also love the VM 1/7. But I think it sits awkwardly amongst all the Voigtlander 35s without a niche of its own.
Compared to the f/2 Ultron, it's too big and marginally faster. The APO is sharper and better corrected (though bokeh is IMO worse). The 1.2 is a stop faster and therefore offers the potential of a lot more background blur. The 1.4 is smaller, cheaper, faster and 'vintage' rendering. The 35/2.5 is even smaller and cheaper.
35mm is a very crowded focal length at Voigtlander, so I guess one had to go.
At 28mm I'd really like to see an f/2.8 or f/3.5 in the style of the compact 40/2.8. Add a collapsible 75/2.8 or 3.5 or 90/4 and it would make an interesting compact trio.

I used it on an a7ii w/ VM-E adapter. I liked the rendering generally and especially its rich contrast in BW. Good colors but personally thought that it lacked the punchlines and 3D quality of the (giant) Zeiss ZE/ZF 35mm lenses…either aperture. I eventually moved through a few other options on Sony before landing on the GM, which I really enjoy.

I think new one is similar in sharpness - excellent - but it has more nervous bokeh.
I know it’s what everyone says but the old one is not a nice lens in your hands. I sold mine. I used to read comments like this and think why? Handling doesn’t matter so much. Turns out it does…
