I think I figured out the issue. Where I took the shot I was looking at, there was an additional light source that made things look odd and it fooled the Auto WB.
I never use Auto WB so I rarely encounter situations where WB does unexpected stuff. Glad you found the source of the problem. The color rendition is, in my opinion, one of the strong points of the D700/D3. I like what it gives me SooC a most of the time so I really only need a few minor tweaks on LR to get results I can sell

Yeah, I usually set WB by Kelvin, but I must have bumped it to AWB. :/
Took my D3 out to the Motocross track Sunday, it and the old Sigma 300 2.8 did the job. Would love the D5 and new 300 2.8, but not in the cards right now.
I've had my D700 going on seven years now; the longest I've owned a single camera! This camera has led quite an interesting life and honestly has reached the point where it has more sentimental than monetary value.
