When I got out of photography as a hobby 15 years ago I had gone through a fair amount of cameras and lenses before I found what I had the most interest in shooting. At the time I really liked shooting a D700 w/ MB-D10 (which was a very nice camera at the time) w/ vintage Nikon glass (28 2.8, 105 2.5, 400 3.5), and a mix of 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 VR1.
Having just got back into photography again *after using my kids sporting activities as justification* I found myself right back into the mix with 24-70, 70-200 VR1, 85 1.4d, 200 F4 Micro, 300 F4 AFS, and a 400 2.8 AFS.
I rented a D4 body from KEH and have really been getting along well with the full size pro body as I have XXL hands, and right after renting the D4 recently came across a D700 and D200 with a bunch of other equipment locally for a price that was impossible to pass up. In the blink of an eye I am right back into the mix and most certainly in over my head, but I think I will really enjoy having a pro sized body for sports and a D700 (w/o MB-D10 if I can get along with the smaller size) for hiking and general travel. I want to keep the D200 for the kids to play around with if they want, but it's so limited by the ISO range that I'm not sure they would enjoy it.
While I do enjoy the D4 it doesn't speak to me or seem to hold a special "that's the one" feeling for me like the D700 seems to. I keep being drawn towards the D3S for it's mix of special rendering and low light performance. So now I am on the hunt for a really nice D3s...thanks FM.

The D3s is pretty sweet. I haven't used mine quite as much in the last 2-3 years, but I won't get rid of it. Nice build, super punchy and contrasty files, nice viewfinder, comfy body... I actually much prefer it to my D700.

I've never been a bleeding edge technology guy regardless of the hobby I'm interested in at the moment. I've always been fine with used, well taken care of older tech. In this case I KNOW that the D3s and D700 won't be holding me back for the majority of what I am attempted to accomplish. I would rather miss a few shots and not have a giant hole in my pocket.

I've def been using My D700 more and more! I do also own the Z8, ZF, Z5II.
I'll be honest with the images i've been able to create with the D700 it has been an absolute blast. If I do find a good deal on a D3/D3S .. I might add that into te mix as well ... It came highly recommended from a friend.

I'm not sure what constitutes a good deal in the current market. I personally want a low mileage clean example, but it looks like I'm going to have to pay over $500-700 for one. Plus with the age I'm not sure how I feel about buying from a private party vs a business with warranty like BH, MPD, etc.
