I own two D3s bodies and honestly considering of adding a D700 to my kit again (as my third body) but I'm still debating whether to go D700 or D600 route...
I wish Nikon shall read this thread and shall release the D710.
Same 16MP used in the D4 with 7 FPS.
If we compose perfectly, the D700 is the ultimate camera, but just in case, some extra pixels with the same quality are not a bad idea after all.
The Df is close but i think a classic camera such as D710 shall be very popular.
My photography has changed since i got my (used) D3,
I try harder to compose correctly and then 12MP is great.
I own the D800 but i reach for the D3 for wildlife. I never used the D700 but who knows....
I might get one.
I just made a purchase of a second D700 - used of course! I shoot roller derby and now that I've added off-camera flash I have no reason to shoot another body. It's just a great body and the price has dropped quite a bit - made buying very easy!
We need to pop this thread back to the first page. This was shot with a manual focus 135 f/3.5 Q AI mounted on my much loved D700... wide open, hand held.
This fellow let me take a few photos before he scampered up the utility pole.
Here is two shots with my D700. Picked it up a few weeks ago (switched from sony and haven't looked back)

I processed this image a short while ago and posted it on the Manual Focus Nikon Glass thread. Looking at it I'm quite amazed at what the D700 produced with a vintage manual focus lenses attached... the 105 f/2.5 P with the Nikon AI conversion kit attached... wide open, hand held.
