I also play with the idea of upgrading to a D800, D750, or even a D610...but then I realise, there's nothing wrong with this camera for my uses...at all. It's simply a tool.
I shot with the D700 for the past 4 years. Always thought it was the only camera I'd ever need. Recently upgraded (?) to D750. Aside from the dual card slots (for weddings) and the better high ISO I want my D700 back. I can't really explain it but that body just felt so right in my hands and never got in the way. It just worked.

I am a D300 shooter and have been perfectly happy with it. That said, this thread and posted images have made me consider getting a low mileage D700.
Thanks, folks.

I used to be a D300 shooter. I bought a D700 thinking there wouldn't be much difference. I was wrong. The DOF is amazing fro one but maybe the biggest thing I noticed was the colours. I always found raw images from the D300 a bit washed out but didnt realise just how much until I got the D700. Now I will happily use untouched files from the D700 only converting them in LR from raw to jpeg.
As others have said though, if you are happy with the D300 don't change just buy yourself a new lens if you have spare cash.
Thanks for the input, Simon. I have reviewed thousands and thousands of images taken with a D700 and really like what I see. I will keep my D300, but will get a D700 if I can find a really nice low mileage one.

There are plenty of D700s about and plenty of low usage ones as many pros had them as back ups. You will have no problem getting one. Only thing is once you move to full frame you will not go back!
a few recent D700 shots... I still love this camera. I still don't think Nikon has matched the feature set, usability and ergonomics of this camera with any of the newer cameras.
I had to unload all my gear damn tax man.
I'm going back to the D700 though when the dust settles. I'm not printing posters, I'm not pushing the DR. I need a camera that I can rely on 100% and due to that, the D700 is perfect for me.
Keep up with the samples!
That's low mileage indeed. Hardly broken in I would say.
Congratulations on what can be considered one of Nikons finest.
I also used a D300 for quite some time and switched to a D3 which shares a sensor and AF module with the D700. I think the upgrade will convince you in that you made an excellent choice when going for the D700.
Whereas I find the use of these aircraft to be offensive and not in keeping with my conscience, there are nevertheless iconic in their way !! I disapprove of the killing they inflict ..... just my personal view !!
