Thanks for bringing back some memories Will! Made me go back through my archives. So many great feeling shots, spot on AF, what a great camera. Also made me realize I miss my Sigma 50 1.4! Man I shot a TON with the D700 and SiggyFitty. It doesn't make sense for me to get rid of my D600 for the D700 (too little resale for the D600) but I might go Sigma 50 shopping!
This is all nonsense - in the Canon forum I am being told every day that my 5D2 and 5D3 suck since they aren't a D810 and here y'all are pretending that the D700 is still a great camera. #sarcasm
All joking aside, some great photos in here! I have a buddy of mine with a D700 laying around in his hoard of photo gear. I believe he still busts it out occasionally despite having an A7 for a primary camera now.
I normally like to form my own opinions based on my own experience with a particular piece of equipment. For me, D700 beats all other Nikon bodies that I have used/owned D3s, D4, D600/D610 and D800/D800e/D810 based on my own needs and uses. I don't care what others may say but I shoot D700 in both FX and DX mode using both FX and DX lenses. It simply works for me.

I use a D800E now because once I went to the 36MP and the amazing dynamic range, it is so difficult for me to use the D700. Having said that.... it is by far the best handing camera I have ever used. I wish nikon would make an exact identical D700 body with the internals of the D800/810 (and of course and a second memory card slot to the d700). I would not buy another camera for 10 years if that were made.
im contemplating getting a d700 since every other camera doesnt have what i want, or cant afford (d4). i have a 70-200 vr1 thats stuck on my d300s but i hear about vignetting with this lens on FX. does anyone have photos with this?

70-200vr1 on FX is awesome, as long as: 1) you dont put anything important in the extreme corners, cuz they will be dark and blurry, regardless of settings. 2) you dont use TC's. if you happen to find yourself in the previously mentioned scenarios quite often, save the hassle and get a vr2.
Wonderful this thread continues to inhabit the Nikon forum as attention is directed to the latest offering from Nikon. Clearly, the D750 has little in common with the camera we celebrate on this thread. Whether one is waiting for a "real" replacement for the D700 or not, the camera continues to give great service to those of us still using it. If Nikon never produces a replacement I'll continue to enjoy what is surely one of the best DSLR cameras that Nikon has produced, the D700.
This is a very mundane photo taken today with the D700. Mounted was a 200 f/4 Q,C, AI, a pre-AI lens with the Nikon AI conversion kit installed. The D700 is the perfect camera for mounting these fine old lenses. The lens was produced from 1973 until early 1976.
