well I picked up a d700 a couple days ago! havent had a chance to really shoot with it yet but I will this weekend. Ive just done some test shots around the house, i LOVE being able to shoot at iso 6400!
My reliable workhorse since 2010. Shares the incredibly versatile sensor and AF system from the D3, and delivers good image quality and performance for almost all purposes. Capable of hitting 8fps with the battery grip and suitable power source, too. I can’t think of a better value camera today.
I have a question about this shot from several pages back. Weasel, Is this a B52, and are those "hash marks" for all the missions it's been on? (Not my shot, just copied here so you'd see what I was talking about).
And here's one of my own. Who would have thought a blight would be pretty?
I recently picked up my second D700 so I can walk around with Zeiss 35/2 on one body, and a longer lens like the Zeiss 100/2 or tele-zoom on the other. I'm always jonesin' for different lenses, but I'm happy with these bodies (and a beater D300) for a few years.
I am not Weasel, but those "hash marks" on that B-52 look like experimental aircraft, so that is probably the B-52 that launched those experimental aircraft for their flights.
And, yes, blight can be a beautiful subject.
Congratulations on your second D700! I tend to acquire second bodies of my favored cameras, too.
Edited to add: There were two B-52 "motherships" that lauched X-15 aircraft, according to Wikipedia.
This one's stationed out at Edwards AFB, CA. Lots of experimental flights and drops for sure. I think there was an A or B model still flying out there.

Looks like I've taken my final photos with the D700 the other night. It'll surely be missed.
You lucky dog! We've been to that museum twice over the past four years and every time we went it was closed. Not that the museum across the street is bad, but the SR-71 blackbird...that's what I wanted to see so badly. Who knows they say third time's a charm. Nice photos.
The NASA NB-52 008 that I shot is siting at the North Gate at Edwards AFB. I drive through it everyday on my way to work and I was lucky enough to see its final few flights back in 2004 before it was retired for good. The B-52 holds a sentimental place for me since it was the aircraft I started out on in my Air Force career. NB-52 008 was one of two NASA B-52 that launched the X-15s, heavy lift bodies, and many, many others.
Edwards AFB is still in the process of relocating their museum outside the gates of Edwards AFB to give better access to the public. The museum was closed off for the general public after 9/11 and funding for museums is next to nothing, so they are slowly gathering funds for the move. Lots of unique aircraft in their inventory including the only 2-seat A-10.
Can anyone comment on AF speed compared to Canon? I currently use a 5D and 6D to shoot weddings and action sports. Looking to upgrade the 5D to something with improved AF and the D700 remains on the list along with a few older 1 series bodies.
I went from 5d to d700. The answer to your question is more involved than you might think:
a- The center array of cross points on d700 are way better than any AF point on 5d.
b- The outer non-cross points on d700 are way better than 5d's non-cross points.
However, the AF accuracy of the outer focus points on a 5d substantially increases when assisted by the autofocus assist on Canon flashes. Unfortunately, the autofocus assist on Nikon's flashes is a hit and miss. I tried 2-3 different Nikon flashes and couldn't get accurate AF with Nikon's AF assist.
