I used to have the 2.8 AF-S II which was a great lens, used for birds mainly with the 1.7x TC.

I picked up a 2.8 AI the other week for $185 !

Some real beautiful shots on here. I'm going to have to get one of these lenses , would it be worth getting the VR1 over the VR2 ? with the saving I could put it towards a D500
