The Kenko will work and allow AF? Awesome, I'll have to find one for sale. I just picked it up last night, and while it is more well used than I thought, but functions great. I'll send it in to Nikon for a cleaning and checkup after using it at Road America in a few weeks. Can't wait to see the results!
That is a screw drive correct? The 1.4 and 2.0 kenko pro 300 both work good on a 180 f/2.8 AF
The 2.0 Kenko Pro 300 does not work on my 600mm f/4. Borrow someone's 2.0 and try it out on your 300 f/2.8 before buying.
You will love the lens, congrats! While not as fast focusing as an AF-S lens, i think it is a great piece of glass, than again I still remember the manual focus days😁. Another nice thing about the screwdrive is that you don't have to worry about focus motor failure. The kenko t/c's are very reasonably priced, if I remember correctly I think I paid about $130 for mine new.
Great to hear. I actually just bought a used 80-200 AF-S and before I even got a chance to use it the AF motor died. So I'm ok with trying a screwdriver lens first. I'm going to order the Kenko now then.

For those of you considering the Kenko TCs, there are two versions. You want the pro 300 model. the other is not going to make you happy. I've got the 1.4x pro 300 and image quality is great. I've used it with my Nikon 180mm, 80-400 VR (original) and now the Sigma 150-600 Sport. The pro 300 will support all functions with either a screw driver lens or an AF-S lens. Focus speed does slow down, this is a great setup for portraits. I do not recommend this setup for action though it can be done.
I forgot to mention that, like morris said, get the pro 300 version, cool thing about this version is that all exit data will display correctly as well. I actually bought an AF-S 80-200 a few years ago used from KEH, clean lens with case and thankfully have had no problems with it. Used gear can be a gamble, but it came with a 6 month warranty, and they supposedly test everything they sell. I have found their grading system to be great also.

I think he's just trying to stretch a 300mm and understands the impact. I have used the 1.4x pro 300 and 1.4x III on my 80-400 at f/8 and they are comparable. My 180 f/2.8 really works well with the 2.0x pro 300 but my 80-400 goes haywire with it installed. He can probably get decent results with a 2.0x pro 300 on that 300mm f/2.8 based on how it works on 180mm.
I'm really struggling on how to thin my herd of lens. I'd like to get a nice used 300mm f/2.8 with VR for those opportunities I get to reduce the shutter speed. There aren't any deals for these anywhere. For those that have shot VR and non-VR (I'm not interested in screw drive except as a back up maybe) versions, how much advantage is the VR?
Just grabbed these while doing local coverage. Done from about 150'-175' behind
the control boards where they placed media for the event. If you have
never see one of these deals.. Check them out. DID NOT want to cover
this, editor made me go. Glad he did.
As a side note: I think the players knew full well where we were posted, a large majority
of images taken were with the players looking straight down the pipe.. as if they KNEW
we were there in that spot.
I could have defenitely used the 1.4. I put the body into DX mode just to get an idea on the LCD of how it would look, and at a few of the corners it would have been perfect. I kinda wanted to ask the lady walking around with her 400 F2.8 with 2x on the back what she was trying to photograph.
But the AF on this old screwdrive was more than fast enough. I havent gone through images yet, I just found a quick GT40 shot since it is one of my favorites. But simply shooting with the 300 was so much fun. Can't wait to go through the images.
D750 + screwdriver. I wish it would focus as quickly as my 70-200 VR II, then I think I would love it. I am able to shoot with a monopod whenever I use it, so the lack of VR doesnt really matter to me. But I am curious as to how fast it would AF on a D500 compared to my D750.
