I posted a longer version of this in the 200 F2 thread.
I always wanted a 300 f2.8 "back in the day" (the day being film F4s and 300 F4 D).
I've got a couple of D810 bodies now and a D500. I got the high-value 200-500, but I'm ready for a prime that I can use for critters.
Not that I'm good at shooting critters, but I enjoy it. I'm not going after carnivores or safari-level stuff -- just birds, deer, some portraits, compression scenic shots and other run-of-the mill duffer stuff.
I was set to buy the 300 F2.8 VRII until I came across the 200 F2. All the smart people say go for the reach, but the 200 F2 is kind of a holy grail in the world of GAS and gearheads.
This awesome thread just makes it harder to decide which one to buy. Either way, I'm picking up the 1.4 TC and the 2. Not that I need any of it. I'm not selling my work.

Once again the old screwdriver proves itself as a great piece of glass!
By screwdriver do you mean the AF-N? I was searching eBay trying to find prices and can't find any AF-n lenses. They all seem to be the AF-I or AF-S versions.

KEH has 'em from time to time. $900 > $1500 DOC.
It's the Nikkor ED-AF 300 f2.8
This one correct? If so I am looking at a local copy tomorrow for a good price. It's a little more used cosmetically than I would prefer, but it is a Nikon lens so I can always sell it for what I paid for it and then upgrade to something newer if I find I use it enough to warrant it.

That's the one...prices have actually gone up I picked up a LN- for $1600 a year or so ago.
From KEH...It was Mint w/ case, keys, caps & hood. GL

I would love a mint one, but figured a good functioning, cheaper option would be a good way to step into the big glass world.
Do you use TC's on it? According to Nikon the TC14 II works but the III does not. How is the AF affected?
I don't. I shoot 'er wide open and employ judicious use
of the most excellent focus limiters. On the upper level
bodies, AF is crisp and accurate. Have the 200 f2/500 f4
and 150-600/200-500 zooms so no TC's for me anymore.
That TC-14E II will NOT work, sorry.

Sorry i haven't replied. Boosted, as others have said, the TC14E wont work. I use the kenko 1.4 with mine and have had good results with it, here is one with the kenko t/c. Shot wide open @f4, 1/1250, iso 1000, effective focal length of 420mm, D7100

But a kenko 1.4x pro 300 will.
The Kenko will work and allow AF? Awesome, I'll have to find one for sale. I just picked it up last night, and while it is more well used than I thought, but functions great. I'll send it in to Nikon for a cleaning and checkup after using it at Road America in a few weeks. Can't wait to see the results!
