Hate to sound stupid, but how do I fine tune this lens?
The way I do it is not scientific nor ideal but it works fine for me. I choose a target, usually something that has writing on it, about 15-20 feet away (the distance you typically shoot at). I use a tripod and shutter release cable, settings at ISO 100 and widest aperture. I take pictures at all AF tuning values (-20 --> + 20) and review them on PS to see which one is sharpest. Sometimes I take pictures at only -5, -10, -15, -20, etc... in order to determine where the best value lies and then work from there. You only have to do it once and it's worth it.
Adam (snapsy) has provided a great systematic technique that's more scientific to AF tune called DotTune method:
I hope it is OK to ask this here. I am building my D810 kit and am looking at a Nikon 300/2.8 AFS v.1 (non VR) or the Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR. My thinking is the 300 will marry better with the 1.4 to 2.0 tc's and give me the 400 reach. I am very grateful for any thoughts on this decision. I can acquire either of these lenses within the budget set for bird reach my going used or refurb. Thank you all. I really admire the photos on this thread.
Peace
Greg
Greg, I really don't use the VR that much on mine and you would certainly save some bucks! I have a friend who just sold his 300 and went with the new 80-400 and can't say enough praises about this lens. I have not used this one, but according to him, it is quick and sharp. Remember, it is the newest of this lens.
The 300 will do well with all the TC's. I have the 1.7
I'm sure that others on here can help you as well and good luck with your purchase!
Had a chance to try out my new to me AFS 300 2.8 D II. It was 28deg.f and the birds were smarter than I was so not much action but I was dying to try it with the TCs. Coming from the 300 f4 I need to work on my handheld technique but I'm tickled with the lens.
