If this lens really compares well to the Nikkor, then I have to wonder what all the worries were about. The Nikkor isn't great at 24mm, but otherwise I enjoyed the images from mine for years.

After it became clear that the A7r does not work well with wide angle RF lenses, there was a growing hope that this lens would offer prime like quality at 24 mm, since it is a native lens designed for these cameras.
Those who require sharp extreme corners at 24 mm in a realtively small packacge, should probably look for something entirely different than a 24-XX zoom lens.

Hi Walter,

I'm afraid uploading all the RAWs is crippling to bandwidth and I get charged extra for hosting them - so long ago I took the decision to use 100% and 50% size JPEGs (always processed from RAW shots) - but the jpegs are saved at 92% quality and in Adobe RGB so they should be good enough to assess IQ....

anyway - Thank you Tim for the fuel res jpgs so far!

Thanks Tim, just read your great article and tested out my lens at 70mm. Quite amazing that this lens can be so good most of the time still be decentered. My dcentering shows up on the lower left side, extremely easy to identify.

Yep. Surely there are alt SLR primes that would better serve that need.

'should probably look for something entirely different than a 24-XX zoom'

Of course. That is a 3-4% use of a midzoom.

So I am really on the fence about upgrading from Canon l 24-70 2.8 mki to this lens. I know the mkii is far superior, but I feel like the sony autofocus, OSS and smaller size might be more valuable then f.2.8. Also is the 24-70 2.8 mki more sharp around the corners at 24?

The canon is better, but I find this comparison apples to oranges. I have the A7r mainly for travel, and find handling and weight more important than sharper corners.

In my view curvature of field is not an issue with the FE 24-70 f/4. The main issue with the corners is astigmatism and it's easy to test this. Just find a flat field subject and square your camera to it. Then focus on one extreme corner and shoot at f/4, f/5.6, f/8 and f/11 apertures.
To me, there are almost no differences between these apertures when checking the focused corner at 100%. The center looks excellent even focusing on the extreme corner giving evidence of lack of field curvature. When stopping down, I see a great improvement at

I wonder if the thick 1.75mm over the sensor contributes to the "field curvature" symptoms.

I don't think the hopes this lens would be the savior of the A7 system were naive, there was every reason to think it might. Presumably it's tuned to use the huge processing power, etc.

But alas, it's seems certainly usable, but hardly satisfying when you want really crisp stuff.
